Whats the word on this? Got a letter from NREMT talking about CA expanding the scope to AEMT level. Is this true? If so when are these changes taking place and are there any schools offering this yet? I've been NREMT for a year and some change now and working for about 8 months and I'm looking into medic school but AEMT/EMT II seems to be a good option if this is actually true. I also heard they will be expanding scopes of medics and talk of CCT medic stuff like that. Please fill me in fellas.

The AEMT as of right now is only recognized in a handful of counties in CA.
I know on the southern end, San Diego County recognizes AEMT and I want to say that San Bernardino does as well, but I don't recall. Either way, both of these counties have yet to train any AEMTs. I think the educational aspect is still getting worked out, not to mention there isn't much of a need for AEMTs in San Diego County. The majority of counties in CA don't recognize AEMT at all. So if you get you're AEMT in San Diego and move to Orange County, your AEMT would not be recognized, you'd only qualify as an EMT.

Personally, it makes for a confusing mess. The state should forgo the whole LEMSA (Local EMS Agency) "Build-Your-Own-System" system and mandate either a two tier system state-wide (EMT/Medic) or a three tier system (EMT/AEMT/Medic) state-wide. A little consistency from county to county would be nice, but then again...that just makes too much sense.

Long story short:
California STATE has implemented the AEMT, but it is up to each LEMSA/County to decided whether or not to recognize/implement it or not. Most do not.

PS.
The CCT Medic stuff is true, but there are others on this forum who are much more informed about that change than myself.

If AEMT is being used as a replacement for paramedics, then yes, it's not needed. If AEMT is being used as a replacement for EMTs, then it is definitely needed.

So the entire state can be as pathetic as LA and OC? California, the leading state at being stuck in the 70s.

In RivCo we have protocols written out for AEMTs but I have yet to hear of any AEMTs here or an AEMT class. And same for San Bernardino County.
