Hi All,

I need someone to field a question as I was just looking at my cert's for my EMT-B. I have my local state card and it expires 9/2010. I am going for my refresher here really soon. Then I looked at utter horror :( that my CPR card is for Apr 2010. I took these both at the same time, so I was under the impression both cards would expire at the same time. No excuse's it's ugly.

Now is my EMT card in AZ dead in the water? Or can I take a CPR class and my refresher afterwards. I do not have a job in this field atm, but just don't want to get myself in trouble down the line.

Thanks for your help!

Just renew your CPR card. You probably have to certify that you have a valid CPR for Healthcare Providers/Professional Rescuers when you recertify.

I would say that you can't practice as an EMT in the meanwhile, but since you aren't anyway, I guess it doesn't matter.

Go to a CPR class ASAP. You'll be fine. Happens all the time.

Ok can I take one of these online classes as long as it is CPR for the professional rescuer? Are these legit..

Either AHA or Red Cross offer a professional CPR course

The only "legit" online course I know of for EMS is the hybrid AHA BLS for the Healthcare Provider. You complete an online course, are tested online, and then go to a AHA center for a skills check (costs additional money).

I have a redcross CPRO card from taking the online class. The online part is just everything that you would get from watching videos and listening to lectures in class. You then go in to do the skills part, and they give you your card. Its the same card as someone who takes the full in person class.

My personal opinion is than any currently practicing EMT should be exempted from CPR recert so long as they are using CPR in practice, unless the protocols change.

In the two years your cert is valid, they generally do change. Plus I know EMTs who have never once done CPR in the field in the 4 or 5 years they've been doing fieldwork. Look at it as CE, you need to practice and keep learning to stay sharp

Agreed, but i'll probably take my next one with AHA, because the RedCross classes i've had have pretty much been a joke. Total amount of time in class actually spent doing CPR, around 5 minutes tops. We would be better off if our EMS service just had everyone do a 1 hour refresher onsite once a year instead of having to go off and take a separate course.
