Hi! I'm taking my NREMT advanced practical this Saturday! I was feeling really confident (I've been in EMS for 5 years, licensed in 2 states, and I'm certified as an Instructor).
But then... 2 other people just failed in my service. Twice. And they both failed... wait for it.... Backboarding!
I'm very nervous, because I can't figure out where they went wrong, and I'll likely do the same thing.
If anyone has any advice on the practical in general, and that station in particular, I'd more than appreciate it!

I hear back boarding is failed mostly by failing to PMS before and after. Allegedly, you could still verbalize all steps as a recap at the end when they ask if there's anything else you'd do.

Do your peers not have any ideas about why they failed? Maybe run through some scenarios with them using a checklist from the NREMT and see if they can remember things they forgot or notice things they did poorly?

Was it the same instructor that failed them both? They may have had a personal preference on LSB that you are not aware of.

If all else fails just tell them it's a useless intervention. That should help.

I've spoken with both of them, and we've gone over the grading sheet. The had the same proctors, but their retest was at a different location with a different proctor. I can't think what they're...we're doing wrong. It's incredibly frustrating, because in our area, we have a lot of MVAs. This is actually a skill we use!

Keep in mind just because a skill is used frequently, it doesn't translate into doing it the proper NREMT exam way.

It's very true that the field way and the NREMT test way aren't always exactly the same. Or they are, but the test expects you to verbalize something you do by muscle memory.

My Boyfriend and I both Took the NREMT Adv practicals ... he failed backboard as well and we have backboarded hundreds of people together. I'm NRAEMT now but still working on Indiana's state cardiac test.

Any chance you've done it incorrectly on "hundreds of people"?

Well I passed both practicals and written, so clearly I HAVE been doing it right. I've been in emergency services for 12yrs.

So? I got my EMT card in 1988 and I still suck at several skills. :) just cuz you've been doing it a long time doesn't mean you do it correctly.

Funny, Ive been a proctor for state evals. I didn't join this site to be attacked for a comment I made, for someone who does not know me to spout off at the mouth.

Hmmm. Maybe time for a thicker skin?
You're a proctor and you still failed the backboard station after doing it "hundreds of times"? What's wrong with this picture?

Perhaps you need to re-read my statement or learn to read. I passed I am NRAEMT certified. My boyfriend is the one who failed. "Stop being a I'm so better than you tool"

I'm not better than anybody, especially an EMS skill proctor. What's the education requirement for that job?

I do know that the back boarding skills are the most failed skill. And in my opinion the most subjective.
