Not sure if this is exactly what you mean, but...
I think quickly establishing the rapport (and sometimes control) with the wide variety of patients is somewhat of an art form. Some people are very easy to work with, while others display oscar worthy theatrics and make every bit of the...
I totally agree. Being that the 'profession' is so young, this will obviously take time. So who/what entity that currently exists has the potential to get the ball rolling? Or is it already underway? What types of things can be done at the bottom end?
I knew this was coming. You picked one out of 5 people I mentioned and are trying to tear it down. I'm sorry you're so jaded to EMS..
Also, the blanket statements you are known for are not applicable to everyone or everything.
For now, all I have to contribute to the topic is this: while that is prevalent, that is not the case with all schools. The educators in my school are all paramedics with higher education including a PhD, a MS, 2 with a BS, a CCEMT-P (probably the most intelligent of them all), and a host of...
The two factors that seem to come into play here are cuff size and contractures.
Obviously the wrong cuff size will give false readings. Also, the brachial and/or radial BP will probably not be accurate on a patient with severe contractures. In those scenarios, popliteal is definitely the...
Yes, it's definitely painful...
I took NR yesterday and just checked...I passed! So keep focused on the light at the end of the tunnel, fellow students.
I once forgot to restock a nebulizer in the box during internship. ...pretty sure I had a look of horror on my face when I listened to lungs and went for it, only to find an empty space where it usually is. Sending an EMT out to the rig to grab one is delegation, right?? <_<
Luckily the...
I just finished my internship! It's been a long bumpy road, and being an intern is definitely challenging. I'm almost there, just organizing all my paperwork and looking for available NR test dates now. B)
I used a voice recorder and made recordings of the drugs by classification...
I agree with you in some respects, but you don't know the system entirely. LA City FD operates under SFTP's (standing field treatment protocols), which allows them to forego base hospital contact and just call in protocol runs to the destination hospital....basically a 'heads up' call on what...
I just want to reiterate that you should listen to everyone at first. Close your eyes while listening and really focus on what you're hearing.
During clinicals at a busy trauma center, I listened to almost every single patients lungs. After a while, I got pretty good and had xrays to...
From reading the customer reviews on amazon, it looks like Bates is the one to start with, then continue onto DeGowins.
Would you agree? Do you have either or both? Are they applicable to field medicine, or do they make a lot of references to and the diagnoses dependent on labs and xrays etc...
This book walks you through step by step. I recommend it. They accompanying cd-rom has like 200 strips to interpret.
Also, save every strip you can from anywhere you can get it. Also ask medics if they have or can save you a code summary that showed several rhythms...
The bell/diaphragm can get damaged if it's in a cargo pocket, so I usually keep it sitting on the clean gurney in between calls. I put it around the shirt collar going in, then clean the whole thing with prep pads after every pt contact.
There's some nasty people out there....ha
I don't understand why someone would even attempt to work as a patient care provider if they have beliefs that will prevent them from providing care as set forth by protocol..
Respecting a patients wishes (no matter what they stem from or how ridiculous they may be) is part of the job. Of...
