Can someone please explain to me the difference between getting hired by FDNY as an emt from the provisional list as opposed to the civil service list. I know they go off the civil service list first when hiring new emt's, so then why doesn't everyone take the civil service exam to get put on...

In order to become a paramedic for the fire department do you also have to be a firefighter? Does this vary by location? If so how does it work in Los Angeles? I read that in New York City firefighters and paramedics are separate even though ems is part of the fire department.

I wanted to know if there is anything I should know before I start the course. Do I need to brush up on anatomy or will it I learn most of these things in the course anyway. Did you find a job soon after you passed the test? Also are you planning to attend the paramedic program?

Is anyone on here a graduate of the EMT or Paramedic program at the UCLA Center for Prehospital Care. Any info would be helpful.

Thanks for all the info everyone. So just to clarify even if I get certified in Los Angeles and work on an ambulance for a period of time I will still have to go through NYC EMS academy/training before they hire me.
