    From EMT-B to Paramedic

Well, out here, the state regulations require 6 months minimum at the BLS level before you can go to medic school. Some of the medic schools have gotten even more stringent and require a full year.

About to start a job at an industrial facility

I'd have to agree that if you're doing this in an official job capacity, the company should pay for the necessary supplies. FYI, my first exposure to EMS was in an industrial setting ...they had me set-up a Medical Emergency Response Team following the closure of the Medical Department. I was...

Interested in volunteering (no license) in NYC....

I just read an article about the Hatzalah organization here in LA, and checked out their website. You do need to be Jewish to be a member out here (assume NY is the same) because the purpose of the organization is to be able to respond in a way that doesn't violate any of the Orthodox beliefs...

    Discovery May Need Unprecedented Repair

I think the current shuttle fleet has reached the end of its useful lifespan. Remember, they started designing this fleet using 1960s technology. They knew from the start that the tile protection system was an overly complex and failure-prone design, yet it was the only one that made sense at...

    Welcome aboard from Southern California.

    Anybody work for AMR?

I've heard a lot of opinions both ways about AMR. My personal experience is minimal...just the shift I ran with LA County (AMR does all their transport) during my training and occasionally chatting with their staff at the ER. I did apply for a job with them some years ago, but that was before I...

    My first CPR.

To add to what's been said, here in CA, there is no "control" for EMTs (just medics). An EMT in the field can only respond based on policy and transport. Not sure about down in SD, but in LA, EMTs can determine death in the field for certain obvious signs, such as rigor. I've run into the same...

    Class starting, need a list.

I can kinda understand the rest, but why in the world did they require you to carry a bio bag?

    Park it like its hot...

Had that happen a time or two myself, and its always kinda strange when the call comes to you. We had a fire alarm call a few months back (turned out to be nothing). After the call, one of the Captains and a couple of us were sitting on the front bumper of the engine BSing when a car pulls up...

    Morons and Fire Hydrants

We were running a drill a couple months back and came onto one of the streets up along the northern edge of town. I kid you not...for two blocks, there was only one single car parked on the street, and guess where this genius decided to park. Since it was just a drill, we called PD to leave a...

    What is your fav?

    Volunteer or Career?

I put all volunteer even though we technically have two paid staff. The Fire Marshal and Fire Inspector are paid and do staff the ambulance during the day (in addition to their fire prevention responsibilities). But, because of the 9/80 schedule City staff work, they're only both on...

How is 911 EMS provided in your town/city/county?

Currently, we only provide BLS. Essentially, you can't run an ALS volunteer service in LA County because the County require you to staff two medics 24/7 to be an "ALS service" and we can't guarantee that with the way we're currently set-up. And, if you're not an "ALS service", even if you have...

    NREMT

I like to look at CE as an ongoing process...my opinion is that you should do it as frequently as possible. If you get into the mindset of cramming it all in at the end of a cycle, you can get into trouble (unexpected conflicts, full classes, etc.). Plus, personally, I learn better if I can...

    good CE Classes for BLS

I very much enjoyed PHTLS. Because of my former work schedule, I was way short on the monthly EMS drills the FD does last year, so I took a weekend PHTLS class through the UCLA/Daniel Freeman Hospital Paramedic school (which was open to BLS too). Not only did I get to work with some great...

    Hurricane Dennis

Good luck to all out Florida members. My prayers are with you. MY DMAT's on call this month, so if it gets bad we may be down there too. Haven't gotten any alerts yet though.

    Tactical EMS

It probably varies somewhat from department to department. I know the LA Sheriff tactical medics are all full deputies who've been through medic and PHTLS training. Not sure their protocol per se, but I believe they go in and function as members of the team until their medic skills are needed...

EMTs Failed to Help Woman in Pennsylvania

We would definitely force entry in that situation. Our utility truck responds on all EMS calls and carries a full range of FE tools. If needed, we'd even roll the engine to the scene.
