    HELP! My EMT-I thinks she's a paramedic!

Gotta love Para-Basics and Para-mediates...It is bad enough that we have Para-gods and Para-medics. I have had a similar situation. When I started at this company as a Basic, there was a brand new basic in my new hire class. well she was already a Para-Basic. we worked 1 or 2 shifts back...

Lights and Sirens: School Buses & Traffic at Reds

Until about 10 minutes I agreed with you, that the mail truck had the right of way because it is federal and actually subject to the state or local laws, but they just showed courtesy and intelligence in allowing the emergency vehicle to go first. I don't who told me this or when. But alas it...

    KED for peds

I am curious about about how many feel about using a KED for spinal immobilization of a pediatric patient. with a c-collar. I have used this method many times. I understand it is not the manufacturers recommend use. I know the chest straps don't close on a pediatric but duct tape works great...

    Pediatric Restraints

I try to use child's own car seat if it is available. we also have the inflatable car seat and our jump seat has a car seat built in. It I get an MVA with a kid in a car seat, I will keep them restrained in the car seat. Much more secure.

Lights and Sirens: School Buses & Traffic at Reds

Answer me this... If police car running lights and sirens, a fire truck running lights and sirens, an ambulance running lights and sirens, and a postal truck arrive at a 4 way stop controlled intersection at the same time, who has the right of way? A school bus with its lights on stops us...

    Interfacility Transport

Our company policy is, if the PCS is not filled out appropriately and completely then we don't take the Pt.

    Interfacility Transport

Actually, the family doesn't even truly care that they get the best, but the perception of care. They say you give bad care but good customer service and treat the Pt and family with dignity and politeness and it will be excuse... But if you give the best care ever from anyone but are short...

    Interfacility Transport

I don't lax on any call. I tell all new Basics that IFT is a great experience for them. this is their chance to practice all their skills. take BP's while the ambulance is in motion. listen to lung sounds. At the Paramedic level IFT's become more interesting. there is usually a bit to do and...

    Stroke patient dies...at shift turnover

I understand that there are different levels down under, but I am curious, to what US level would you most closes compare in reference to training and protocols? EMT Boot Camp Starts Monday

I agree it is not the job of the FTO to teach the new B/I/P to be just that a B/I/P. But usual the new level needs some guidance and help building some confidence in their new level. You "What happens if a few students "doesn't get it"? ". well, there are some people that no matter hard we try...

    Stroke patient dies...at shift turnover

So, we have established that ischemia will happen before infarction. So you give O2, ASA, Nitro, and Morphine. So you have temporarily delayed the inevitable infarct. I believe we are in agreement here. So with proper medicine and MD management, this may have a chance of surviving with mininal...

    EMT Boot Camp Starts Monday

I completely agree. I agree again. that is why I said new EMT-B/I/P need to do some kind of residency. Something more than just clinical time. when they are done with class, they need to prove they have the ability to work at that level to a qualified preceptor/FTO before they can play at that...

    EMT Boot Camp Starts Monday

This is not a requirement or even the responsibility of Basic. Since the basic can not preform any of these skills, or even true training on ALS skills. If a Basic spikes the wrong bag or an expired bag, it is not the responsibility of that Basic. An I/P needs to verify everything they do. When...

Episodes of Emergency! now available on Hulu

"Emergency!" did the most for advancing EMS than anything else. more than the "white" paper. kinda depressing that a fictional TV show advances our field more than any medical research or governing body. The interesting part about the show, is the medicine they performed was accurate for...

    X-Collar Cervical Spine Protection

It looks beneficial. but again as was previous mentioned, how difficult will it be to apply to a supine patient with manual stabilization being held? I understand that in the vid the patients were standing without manual stabilization (I don't think stabilization in those cases would have made a...

Funny one liners you've said to overheard to a patient

I do something similar. I always tell patients that we only drop patients on [yesterdays day of the week]. I do this for 2 reasons. 1)it helps with evaluating alertness. When patients realize that it is not today, they always have a humorous comment to make. I've done this as well. or...

Funny one liners you've said to overheard to a patient

OK, I got 2 for everyone... 1] we arrive on scene to find this guy standing at a pay phone. The Pt states he was drunk and laid himself down on a friends floor. he said he felt something walk into his ear. So he poured drinking alcohol into his ear. On the way to the hospital, I made my...
