    CPR Guidelines

I've usually seen it written A/Ox4, but it just means "alert and oriented times four." The four questions you ask gauge the patient's awareness to: 1.- Person: "What is your name?" 2.- Place: "What city are we in?" 3.- Time: "What day of the week is it?" 4.- Events Leading Up to Incident: "Can...

Thanks for sharing, beano. Interesting scenario!

Just took the NREMT - Finally!

My test cut off at 70 and I passed. There were some questions that I knew I had gotten wrong as soon as I clicked "Next," but it all turned out fine. You'll probably see the results Monday morning. Good luck!

CA Bay Area - Scope of Practice

Interesting. That's Paramedics Plus, or other companies as well?

New EMT in CA: A Few Questions...

Thanks for the recommendation, jeepdude911. I'll probably apply there, although it's quite a long commute from where I live. An update: sorted out all the DMV stuff today, and passed the written test in one go! The flashcards floating around on the internet are a very good representation of...

    Waze App?

Google now owns Waze, so a lot of the traffic and accidents data is also displayed in Google Maps. It's a useful app; one of the EMTs I did my ride-alongs with used it every call.

I should wait to apply right?

Yeah, the temp license was basically a PDF copy of a letter with my state license number (Exxxxxx). It says it's good for 45 days, while you're waiting for your official card to arrive. My status on the central registry showed up as "Active" 3 days or so after I received the email. Good luck...

I should wait to apply right?

I got my temporary CA state license with my EMT license number two days after I turned in all the paperwork. My status on the central registry site now says "Active," so I assume I can start applying for jobs once I get my ADL. If you haven't already, you should get your temporary license...

New EMT in CA: A Few Questions...

Thanks! Yeah, I'm all set except for the DMV stuff: once I get my DL-51 sorted out, take the written test, and pick up an H-6, it'll be time to finally get a job!

34 y/o female with chest pain

Newbie here, but interesting scenario, so I'll give it a try. My best guess given all the information so far would be PE; the C-section + being in bed during recovery would increase her risk for that I think. Relatively young patient, so an MI would be rare. Is the patient obese? Any...

New EMT in CA: A Few Questions...

An update--now have my state EMT license, and will be getting my DL-51 medical exam in two days and then taking the ambulance drivers' certificate test later this week! A wrinkle with the DL-51 form though: apparently with the updated 2014 form, the green medical examiner's card was...

    Suctioning

My instructors gave us ranges: Adults: 10-15 sec Children: 5-10 sec Infants: < 5 sec General NREMT number is no longer than 15 seconds for adults, but apparently they sometimes have ranges in the answer choices to try to throw you off.

    NREMT Results...can anyone help?

Yep, as Robb mentioned, if you do pass, your name at the top left will have your new national registry number, your certification level (EMT), and your NREMT expiration date. For further details, you can click on "Check Initial Entry App Status" at the left. My exam ended at 70 as well and took...

CA Bay Area - Scope of Practice

Right, I found the policies online after Akulahawk mentioned it. Thanks for the comprehensive answer, interesting take on nitro admin--hadn't thought about a lot of that!

CA Bay Area - Scope of Practice

Thanks for the tips, both of you. Yeah, I've definitely heard 911 ambulance positions are a lot tougher to get in the Bay Area than down in LA, especially for someone straight out of EMT school.

CA Bay Area - Scope of Practice

As I did my EMT training in LA County, I'm sure there's some differences in the EMT scope of practice/protocols up in the Bay Area (Santa Clara Co., Alameda Co., etc). If some veterans could chime in on anything that comes to mind, that'd be fantastic. A couple things I can think of: -...

New EMT in CA: A Few Questions...

Thanks for the tips. Just got both my Live Scans done today, so I'm already down ~$130, and haven't even applied for my state license or ambulance certification yet :( On another note, does anyone know of any hiring news from any Bay Area companies that run 911 calls (Paramedics Plus, AMR, RM...

Great, thanks stemi, I'll probably give them a call. So the ID badge is something that definitely happens post-hire--I won't need it now?

New EMT in CA: A Few Questions...

Thanks guys. Good tip, cmyk! The CA DMV website does seem to only mention DoJ, not FBI. Following up on my earlier question, if I were to apply for licensure before applying for positions, I suppose I just leave all the employer-relevant information blank? For example, see Santa Clara County's...
