CA Bay Area - Scope of Practice

I did my LA Co. EMT April through June this year. Our instructors told us to watch out for that in the future since the policy is just being rolled out/clarified now. Thanks for the input though, that's interesting... I don't think pulse ox is strictly within EMT scope of practice (most EMT...

What is the next step to become a Emt-B?

Yep, that's what I did. Save some time and get your DMV and EMS agency LiveScans done at the same time. Note that the EMS agency LiveScan will be more expensive, since it's DOJ/FBI, while the DMV one is just DOJ. The information automatically gets sent to the respective agencies, all you need...

Any 911 providers in Ferguson area? (Riots)

EMS/fire often gets lumped together with LEOs in the average citizen's mind, sometimes due to tiered response and similarities in uniforms. I'm sure EMS crews out there have their hands full dealing with the flareups. Stay safe.

Pediatric pads on AED for adult CPR?

Agree with chaz90. When someone asked about that unlikely scenario in my EMT class though, the instructor suggested that it would probably be a waste of time to use the ped pads. Unless he had a lot of spare hands on deck, he would continue CPR w/o the AED.

How long should I wait to take the NREMT after getting county certificate? Clarifying questions..

You have 2 years after your EMT course is complete to certify (take NREMT exam and apply for California state EMT licensing). If you fail to do so before then, you will need to retake your EMT course, as a course completion certificate will need to be submitted for both NREMT (electronic, your...

    Ambulance cert CA

You can get a $5 booklet with all the information at your local DMV office. Sucks to wait in line for it, but it is what it is. I've attached some other resources I used though.

    Rural Metro Milpitas job offer?

I just got a call today from Rural Metro, with the interview site in Milpitas. I believe it's for their IFT division, not the San Jose 9-1-1 division.

    EMT Licensing in California?

No, that's just the NREMT certification, not a license to practice. To get that, you'll need to visit your local county EMS office. For Alameda County, see here. Note that you will need to get your Live Scan background check done before then, and since you'll need another one for the DMV...

Wake County EMS finds that longer CPR saves lives

Interesting findings, thanks for the share. I also found these to be pretty notable: By "continuous chest compressions," they mean CPR with an advanced airway in place, right? Wonder what they used to cool the patients, and by how much. Surely not cold packs?

New Site Coming Saturday - August 9

It's too bad, I liked vBulletin. Another forum that I help moderate is in the process of switching to Xenforo: we've been having lots of problems migrating over our massive database, but hopefully it goes more smoothly here! :)

What subjects to study for nremt b?

Do sets of comprehensive practice questions and see what subjects you miss most frequently. Then study those topics in depth. 4 days isn't really enough to reread the entire book, so that's the best use of your time. Two other pointers: - Be rock-solid with your patient assessment...

How soon after Your emt class did you take the nremt b?

I registered the day after I finished the class, but ended up waiting two weeks while the instructor approved everything. My EMT training program did a study and found that NREMT first-time pass rates fell off for those who waited more than three months to take the test. Of course, there are...

Union v. Non-Union in Private EMS?

Fair points, thanks all. So far I've heard from people in Protransport-1 that the union hasn't helped them much if at all. Not much has changed other than a very slight increase in wages. Anyone in the Bay know if any of the following are unionized? Royal Ambulance Westmed Ambulance Silicon...

Union v. Non-Union in Private EMS?

Asking out of curiosity: are most private ambulance companies in California unionized? I've read that Protransport-1 was fairly-recently unionized, and I've heard that Santa Clara County EMS (Rural/Metro) is unionized. Any pros/cons to be aware of when looking for an EMS job that is unionized...

What made you decide to work in EMS?

Planning on eventually attending medical school and becoming a doctor, and I felt EMS was a great way to develop my patient assessment and interaction skills. Especially in 9-1-1, EMS providers face the challenge of doing the best for patients with unique presentations in unpredictable situations.
