Questions for Emt, rookies and seasoned professionals and everyone in between.

Concurring with @DEmedic , a nice stethoscope goes a long way. No need to be expensive about it; the Littman Lightweight II SE is a "nice" stethoscope. Or the MDF equivalent, though I prefer Littmann.

    Low Blood sugar

How so? Think there was a topic on this a while back, but can an AED tell the difference between vtach and pulseless vtach? Not at all saying fire wasn't in the wrong, interested in the failsafe comment.

Was told this could be the largest OSHA fine for an ambulance service.

The only unique thing about this company is that they were caught. I've had the pleasure of working for a company that hadn't been caught yet. I also had the pleasure of putting in my 2 weeks after my second shift on the job.

    Bls in austin tx

Acadian does 911 in Bastrop County, just east of Travis County and City of Austin. That said, I've seen many ATCEMS trucks on the western side of Bastrop. I have a friend who was a paramedic for Acadian in Bastrop and she didn't much care for it. They still do plenty of transports, and she...

Paramedics barred from saving Orlando shooting victims because club was deemed too dangerous

Train LEOs first aid, triage, and extrication skills and make patient evacuation an objective. Correct me if I am wrong, but I doubt any ALS skills would be used in that environment. The last thing we need is defenseless personnel starting IVs around the corner from the shooter's unknown location.

Fire destroys ambulances outside East Surrey Hospital (UK)

Yikes. Is the cause known yet?

    NREMT Questions (EMT-B)

If I remember correctly, for the test knowing what is "critical" (circumferential, genitalia, etc.) was more important than counting.

    Boots

Just the ATACs I mentioned, sorry.

    Boots

I swear by the 5.11 ATAC ASTM boots. I bought the 6" pair 3 years ago, used them for EMT school and IFT work for a yearish, then very abusive work in SAR (including high angle and cave work) for an additional 2 years. A few weeks ago the sole on one of them started peeling down in the front, but...

    Rookie crisis

I read it as him having alcohol swabbed the patient, grabbed a disposable auto-stick stylet type of device, and held it upside while applying pressure. (1) OWWWWW. (2) Literally the 2nd cleanest possible stick (1st cleanest being some sort of sterile stick).

    Malpractice forums

Kind of an odd forum to have, especially when it still consists of replies likes: "Get a consult with a malpractice attorney. They will be able to give you a better idea if you have any cause of action." At the end of the day there is only so much you can do. As mentioned, a competent adult...

    Donning a Johnny prehospital

For that it could work, just like you don't care where the spine boards go (which are usually owned by the EMS agency anyway). All of our linens are labeled for our specific location, so they aren't re-distributed after the contractor does laundry.

    Donning a Johnny prehospital

Do you only transport to that ED though? Eventually it would mess up numbers, one hospital's gowns flowing to another, unless you treat it like spine boards I suppose. Drop one off, pick one up. I see the merit, just some logistical issues that I know the hospital I am at would fret about. Not...

    Donning a Johnny prehospital

Never heard it called a Johnny... I can't imagine it being economical for EMS systems to gown-up their patients. In the hospital we have a 3rd party laundry system setup, but I doubt EMS could efficiently set this up. Would be a waste of money. And disposable gowns would just be a awful. That...

How do you handle your stress?

Climbing and rappelling. Initially got into it for SAR, but a few of us go out for fun every once in a while. Other hobby is programming, but that is more maintenance during the school year and building new things during the breaks. Having a hobby is key, I'd say even if it is related...

    Evidence-Based Practice, yeah?

    Buying an ambulance?

Can't really knock the 300,000 miles, not that crazy, especially being as old as it is. That said, now that you had the thought, I hope it is all the way through your head and out the other side. Put that 4k down on a nice used car and be a happy, normal person. On a side note, I my family...

Struggling with scenario type questions on exams

Patient assessment, both trauma and medical, involves a pretty straight-forward algorithm that the NREMT loves to test. There are probably multiple flowcharts in your book depicting it from General Impression to Primary Assessment to Secondary Assessment (broken down to vital signs, SAMPLE Hx...
