    Gift for nursing student

FYI - decided to get the BFF a set of nice wine glasses and a stopper. We both enjoy the vino and she didn't have any real glasses at her new place yet. Also had to get the pup a good toy. She's probably just finishing the NCLEX as we speak. So proud of her!

Girl hair + ADHD = hellish hair appointments. I can't even do the repetitive leg bouncing thing I tend to do in classrooms.

Who here hates haircuts?! Yay. I do. I'm going in for the first time in like 8-9 months tonight. I hate it. You have to sit still for over an hour in a place that smells weird as a total stranger molests your head and attempts to make awkward chit-chat with you. Then they ask you what you do...

Any EMT-B's out there over 50?

I worked with a 53-year-old medical student once. She will probably be 60+ before she's finished with school and residency. I also had a 50-60 year old in my EMT class. He did very well (probably in better shape than most of the 20-something year old wannabe firefighter guys in our class) Sent...

Cool-headed ambulance man drives alleged hijacker into trap

We have panic buttons, and two different code words that are handled differently per protocol - one is more of a general trouble one (situation gets out of hand and extra help needed, shots fired at officer, etc) and the other is specific to a hostage situation. A panic button will get the...

    Tips for court appearances

Talk to your service and see if there's a court liason you can get in touch with. I've been subpoenaed and the day of the trial they told me they didn't need me. Often times you can ask to be notified whether they really want you to come or not.

I know. I have an extremely complicated love-hate relationship with Wal-Mart. Mostly hate. Our relationship has even been in the news.

For some reason it also seems like the weapons come out with the heat. We had an honest-to-God assault with jumper cables at a Wal-Mart today.

Not a bad idea at all... we talk to the folks at our contracted tow company several times a day. One day one of them sounded funny and sort of drunk. They sent them over there to check on him and he turned out to be having a stroke.

Avoided the heat wave for past few days being at 10,000 ft, hanging out with moose and such. Back down to 5,400 ft and the city. :(

What to expect in a nursing home

I think one thing to be aware of and cautious of are the communicable diseases. Things like MRSA, norovirus, C.diff can spread like wildfire in nursing homes. You have so many people in close proximity, many with weakened immune systems and the like. Don't be afraid of your patients, but don't...

Don't tell anyone, but I'm going to start a business. You pay me $5, I throw on a mask, punch a person of your liking in the face when you happen to be in their presence, and run. I will offer 50% off for people like those you've mentioned.

    Do's and Dont's of applications?

I'd like to point out that a portfolio is not a bad idea. I've brought a portfolio to most of my interviews, and have had offers for nearly all of those jobs. Although anecdotal, it couldn't have been too wrong because compared to most I've been very successful. I had several people thank me for...

ALRIGHT Does anyone else here get flooded with completely irrelevant work emails? I'm about done with it. Before you send something TO OUR ENTIRE FREAKING DEPARTMENT OF NEARLY 100 PEOPLE - please consider the fact that it really just needs to go to 2 or 3 people you lazy jerk. Rant done.

Are San Diego City Paramedics Making Too Much?

They way things are, honestly, all of the good medics I've met have fallen into one of three categories: Those on private services who are typically burnt-out and frustrated with their situation (they often are involved in contracts in which the FD has total control). Third-service or...
