How has your call volume been lately?

I can't speak to the heat wave ya'll are having a bit east of me, but I can tell you that here the 4th of July has been the single busiest day for dispatch, police, fire and EMS consistently for years.

    My BIGGEST pet peeves

It probably depends on the jurisdiction. I know that I appreciate it because although we only send fire/EMS on confirmed injury accidents (or biggies like rollovers/fires/etcs), we have to send PD hot if it's an unknown injury accident... and I'd rather NOT send anyone hot especially if we don't...

    My BIGGEST pet peeves

You can usually tell how bad an accident is up in dispatch by how many calls we get and who's calling (in serious injury accidents, the involved parties usually aren't the first on the phone). When you call me because you got in an accident, it's the only call and you spend the first 5 minutes...

    Burn out and Turnover

Most long-time paramedics I know who are burned out at all are frustrated with their wages, benefits, supervisors, working conditions, lack of respect from other agencies and medical staff, and the politics - not their patients. They are still fantastic caregivers and their patients are probably...

    Pre-Test/Personal Interview

As you've said they can vary. I've mostly heard of written exams on your knowledge of EMT stuff, and if the program has pre-reqs such as anatomy and physiology, that material as well. The program should be happy to tell you more about what you will be tested on.

    Burn out and Turnover

As fun as googling for silly images advising ya'll to get back on track with this thread has been, please don't make me find another one.

As mentioned above, keep it on topic please.

Bad situation. What would you do?

Sorry to hear about this rough call. We're all here for you with internet shoulders to lean on, as you can tell. Murphy's Law would probably dictate that seconds after amputating her hand, the fire would fizzle out as the engine pulls up, and you'd be standing there with a bloody saw and...

    Liquid Asphalt

I may be imagining this but I think I remember seeing in a medical text that mayonnaise can help remove tar from skin. Obviously this wouldn't be done prehospitally and I may be wrong. I'll try to look it up again when I get home. Sent from my telefono

It's going to be fun explaining to the doctor that the infected fish hook injury abscess thing on my thumb is totally unrelated to the blisters from the muffler burn on my palm on the same hand. FML.

Do You Let Students Buy You Stuff?

Brought cookies, brownies, etc most of the time I've rode with fire PD or EMS. I've never been on a ride along for a grade. I brought food because I know having a student or rider can be a pain in the butt and I appreciate the hospitality. Sent from my telefono

Best E.M.T. Training program in or near Aurora, CO?

I love HealthONE's instructors and was willing to make the trip down to Englewood to take additional courses even though CCA is much closer. I haven't heard the best things about Arapahoe Community College's program from friends who went there. I believe the only other one in the metro area...

    Physical "Restraints"...share your knowledge.

5 NJ EMTs had their certs suspended in 2010 for the death of a combative head injury patient. They restrained him while he was prone and it looks like he was in cardiac arrest by the time they got him to the rig. Cause of death was positional asphyxia. State's suspension letter to one of...

I forgot that the muffler on the lawnmower is hot. Now I have a lovely partial thickness burn across my entire palm.

How much did becoming an EMT/medic cost you?

All in all less than $250. My high school had a program that reimburses students for college coursework so my $800-900 tuition ended up free. $70 for NREMT, the rest for the book, uniform and such.

Dumbest thing heard on the radio

Cop: "Can we get Fire to bring some gas masks back out here for the body-snatchers?" Long story.

EMT-B's that pass the test amaze me..

I disagree. Considering how many legal documents an EMT will write, you need to be able to spell. If you have poor spelling you need to work on improving it and still ensure your reports are presentable and spelled correctly. I worked with a girl with extreme dyslexia. She carried a small...
