    100% Directionless Thread

I am no longer afraid of the Q word. I've used it many times lately and have not gotten a single call. The only thing that keeps me from typing it here is that some of you might appreciate me not posting it.

    We make good party conversation!

I tend to just tell a story about a lady we had once with some gangrenous tissue on her foot. We lifted the blanket to take a look and it was covered in maggots. Usually stops people from wanting to talk about my job anymore.

    hairstyle

I've noticed similar trends around here. Many of the..uhm... more experienced.. guys have longer hair while most of the younger guys like me have really short hair. Not sure why that is, but personally I tend to go with shorter hair because it is easier to maintain (no combing necessary)...

    Joking With The Patient

We had a patient once that was super-paranoid about us dropping her. Nursing home patient that was actually in the ER because she got dropped while being moved from bed to her wheel chair. We were doing the whole reassuring her we wouldn't drop her thing the entire time. We get back to the...

    personal trauma packs?

I have a tiny store-bought first aid kit in my vehicle. Nothing more than a pair of tweasers, some bandaids, ASA, tylenol, motrin, cold pack, and some gauze. I've opened it once--because I got a headache while driving cross state and knew that the meds would be expiring soon. Only reason I...

    How to backboard

My partner and I recently got this same speech after back boarding a woman who was alert but not oriented after an unwitnessed fall in her room at a nursing home. We couldn't assess her beyond the objective findings--even had she been oriented, neither my partner and I nor anyone of the nursing...

    Carotid pulse palpation

Like Rid said, it's easier to find on thinner people. It's easy to get a little thrown off when you have to dig through folds of skin to find it.

    Pocket knives

I carry just a cheapo knife.. three inch blade half serrated and another fold out razor blade. Use it a lot when improvising solutions in tricky situations.

Private service... We have a 911 coverage contract with one city around here, axillary support for a few local FDs, and have the transport (emergent and non-emergent) contracts for many of the nursing homes around here as well. Good mix of everything. I wish we got to do residence calls more...

    Patient restraints

Not so much danger after we got it away from her when she initially attacked us which we did not expect. It was at a nursing home. Would expect an 80+ year old patient to pull a weapon on you? She swung it and my reaction was to block with my hand, which luckily ended up just hitting her hand...

ALL RIGHT, once and for all: Who owns the scene?

Checked our big black book (actually just got bored on downtime and was having a protocol dispute with my partner that I knew I was right on and happened to stumble across this) 1. LE -- their scene until it comes to patient care. 2. FD 3. FD

    Patient restraints

My partner and I have had a couple of incidents where we needed to get creative with a sheet and the 5-point... One was a Behavioral patient picked up from a nursing home who actually tried to stab us with a shiv when we showed up. The nursing home staff said they didn't want to get the police...

EMS Multitasking (Multiple jobs during downtime)

It's the official policy. Very few people follow it. There's a joke among our employees. We refer to downtime as "study time" and napping as "studying".
