Charleston County EMS Hiring Medics, Closing 12/18

Read the post again, they used to pay roughly $11/hr. They have since went from a 56 hour workweek with a few 48 hour spots to all-42 hour weeks, 12 hour shifts, 16 hrs. cap on consecutive hours. Their starting hourly range is now $15.85 - $16.82. It's a pay cut from what your making in Texas...

Will a breakdown on the job likely end in termination?

The OP just does this part time. Imagine if they were operating FT + hrs. in a busy system like ATC-EMS. This article about employee suicides comes to mind: http://www.austinchronicle.com/news/2015-05-08/high-stress-at-ems/ We've probably scared off the OP at this point. No use beating a dead...

Will a breakdown on the job likely end in termination?

OP, if you're serious about keeping your job, agree to a psych eval, and clearance to work, with meds if prescribed. If they want to terminate you, I would suggest that first.

Will a breakdown on the job likely end in termination?

Bipolar indeed. I've had a couple of flings that I had to drop when those types of symptoms started revealing themselves. Not dealing with it in a relationship, and not dealing with it in a work environment, unless it's a patient.

Will a breakdown on the job likely end in termination?

"Analyzing the emotion love" caused a mental breakdown OTJ? I almost spit out my drink when I read that. I hope you didn't give your employer that as the reason for your breakdown. If my partner on the rig came out with something like that, I would have some serious trust issues with them. Maybe...

Will a breakdown on the job likely end in termination?

I wouldn't want to work with someone prone to panic attacks or violent outbursts over things that are not life or death. I deal with them often enough as patients, and the trigger is usually something really, really minor.

Will a breakdown on the job likely end in termination?

If you can tie the nervous breakdown to a death in the family, your house just burned down, spouse just served you with divorce papers or was caught double dipping, you could probably survive the event. If it's something stupid like relationship drama, missing a social function because of a late...

Firefighter who flunked physical injured 10 days into job

The subject of the thread failed FDNY physical standards, and was still allowed to graduate the academy. Strength standards, which directly translate to lifting ability in the field was a natural progression to the conversation. What do you and others think reasonable physical standards for EMS...

Charleston County EMS Hiring Medics, Closing 12/18

I last worked for them back in 2008. Then, they had a 56 hr schedule, where medics started at around $38k/yr, up to $45k after six months and being cut loose as a crew chief, top pay $68k. That worked out to a starting pay of a little over $11/hr. Recently they went to 12 hr shifts, for a 42 hr...

    Municipal EMS employment in U.S.

https://jobsweb.charlestoncounty.org/hronline/public/vacancylisting.aspx Charleston County SC is hiring medics right now. This can be good to look at, so you can reference their pay, benefits, and work schedule vs other departments after you get your medic cert...

Firefighter who flunked physical injured 10 days into job

Okay, when I say routinely calling for lift assists, I'm not talking about picking someone up from a bathtub, navigating through a hoarding environment, getting someone over a motorized stair lift, or using a Reeves down winding stairs, wet/icy terrain, etc. I'm sure that everyone can come up...

    Municipal EMS employment in U.S.

If I can get my 457 high enough, I might take an early 20 year retirement and apply for Greenville and Charleston (if they offer PT/per diem). I loved living in Charleston, and I do hear that Greenville is very desirable as well.Hit 20 yrs, then start applying. Northern Virginia is a great place...

    Municipal EMS employment in U.S.

I'm really liking this trend of departments going to 42 hr schedules with 12 hr. shifts! Kudos to Greenville and Charleston, and ATC-EMS if they get their act together and do like the other two. That wouldn't be a bad retirement spot for me, pick up a PT position, and still have the majority...

Firefighter who flunked physical injured 10 days into job

There are people that go into the office on light duty and never see the field again. Where I work, you have one year to return to full duty after your last surgery, or you're done. There are people that "get hurt," do 11 months on light duty, "get hurt" their first tour back, do 11 months light...

Pay scale looks really good for the area, and the 42 hr. schedule is definitely a plus. They incentivize holding an EMS degree as well: https://www.greenvillecounty.org/Emergency_Medical_Services/pdf/GCEMS_salary_ranges.pdf Do they do 24's, 12's, or something different? OP, if they do 24's...

Firefighter who flunked physical injured 10 days into job

The CPAT as it is today is a watered down physical test that was made a standard because most people could pass it regardless of physical ability, so more people could be included if you know what I mean. In the fire academy, the physical stuff goes well beyond CPAT level exertion, so the...

    Municipal EMS employment in U.S.

http://www.wakegov.com/employment/salaryschedule/Pages/default.aspx Band 4 is EMT-I, and Band 6 is a paramedic. This is Wake Co. NC, one the most highly regarded EMS employers in the Southeast and the country in general. So, medics get $33k to $56k, and it will take you a long time to get to...

    Municipal EMS employment in U.S.

The pay isn't great in the Carolinas in general. Expect to start in the low to mid $30k for a yearly salary on a 56 hour workweek, which is $11/hr best case scenario. Charleston County EMS in South Carolina pays higher than most other places, around $40k to start IIRC, but where they blow away...
