Things I can't wear to my provincial licensing exam

Although they're going to be implementing the CBT very soon... the pilots are supposed to be happening in the next fiscal year, to be fully implemented in 2010. Its been a ricidulously long time in the making... its been in the works since 2005!

Things I can't wear to my provincial licensing exam

Just me then I guess. I remember them going over it in the powerpoint before the written started as well. Its really more of a formality really I mean who are they kidding its not like they can make us vow to secrecy. It think it just has to do with the Exam Committee wanting to ensure the...

Things I can't wear to my provincial licensing exam

Yep, same weekend. Ahh... That sounds more familiar... :P Lol I must be really tired to have missed that one. I had the drowning scenario. Although there is no way ACP can stop us... we did sign a contract not to discuss exam procedures or scenarios. That was one of the forms you had to hand in...

Things I can't wear to my provincial licensing exam

I'm an EMR in Alberta as well... Those vital signs do indicate increased ICP, but I've never heard of them referred to as "Cushings." Interesting. I've only ever known Cushings as the endocrine disorder... Neat.

Things I can't wear to my provincial licensing exam

I know the 4-6 week wait is killer. I'm confident in my written though it shouldn't be a problem. I passed first go aswell. It was surprisingly straightforward. Cushings? What exactly are you refering to? Cushings is a chronic endocrine disorder...

    Passed!

In Alberta you wait 4-6 weeks for the results on the written portion! Talk about brutal! Practical is on the spot thank goodness. Congrats! Welcome to EMS!

    Age and EMS

You take a hard line. Let's remember though, that regardless of age or maturity, practitioners of all levels have to: 1) be accepted into an education program 2) successfully complete said education program 3) be successful on state/provincial and national registry exams 4) Be hired by an...

    LifePak 15 Defibrillator/Monitor

Apparantly it can! I've never seen it personally but a CCP I work with often said he had that feature on his service's new LP12.

    LifePak 15 Defibrillator/Monitor

The standard: 4 and 12 Lead ECG Pulse Oximetry ETCO2 (intubated and non-intubated pts) NIBP 12 lead transmission Invasive pressure line Perhaps core body temp monitoring to facilitate the eventual initiation of therapeutic hypothermia in pre-hospital care. It sounds like they've already...

    Age and EMS

Learning & observing and the occasional band aid. It was similar to Scouts but its more learning about healthcare and healthy lifestyles oriented.

    Age and EMS

I'd like to put in my two cents from the other end of the pond... I'm 17 and have just recently been certified by the College of Paramedics (the provincial governing body in Alberta). I'm actively in the process of (hopefully) being hired by a rural ambulance service and I currently work for a...

Things I can't wear to my provincial licensing exam

The requirements are for both actually... I sat the same exam this weekend. Its a really... different process. It required 3 holding areas... Felt a little like a herd of sheep. jochi, how'd your exam go?

You Do Not Need An Ambulance...

I'd rather come out and give them the peace of mind and have them sign a refusal than leave them to lay in agony on the floor because they "didn't want to cause a fuss." The article from JEMS highlights how many practitioners loose sight of the human aspect of our profession. We are...

You Do Not Need An Ambulance...

Sometimes EMS is all that an elderly patient may have to get them back in bed. Its safer to call and be assessed at more advanced ages due to the increased risk of injury as a result of aging. To them - its an emergency. My grandfather sustained a hip fracture from falling out of bed at 73...

    EMT-P training in Alberta, Canada

That's the problem... They pay EMT's too much they have no incentive to pay 20 grand to get their Medic so now we're short on medics! Edmonton isn't as Desperate as Calgary... from what I understand they were paying tuition for EMT's to get their medic.

    EMT-P training in Alberta, Canada

Portage is a good school - I have a lot of friends that went there. Agreed! Jasper and Banff are absolutely beautiful places to see. I try to get down there at least a couple times a year to take it all in.

    EMT-P training in Alberta, Canada

Its not so much a problem of missing intubations... Thats an issue thats facing ALS providers all over. We just have some medical directors that don't believe in non-visualized intubation. They are all about having a definitive airway in place and a combi-tube or an LMA just doesn't cut it in...

    EMT-P training in Alberta, Canada

Yes... its known as a "Zero to hero" program and it has very little respect in the field. I personally know a few grads from the program and they feel they are not as well prepared as other EMT-P's. It takes you from Standard First Aid to full blown EMT-P in 4 years. You have no time to...

Calgary & Edmonton ( EMR, EMT ) TRAINING ADVICE

That depends what you're looking for. If your looking for an emergency ambulance service its slim pickings unless you go fairly rural (Barrhead, Gibbons/Bon-Accord, Flagstaff County, etc...). If you want to stick with Edmonton and area, Inter-Hospital Ambulance Service is always looking for...

Calgary & Edmonton ( EMR, EMT ) TRAINING ADVICE

Oh and I should mention... There is a distinct possibility that Paramedic-Fire fighters in Alberta will become a thing of the past as a result of the new Provincial Ambulance service coming into effect on April 1, 2009 (barring industrial sites). There's a lot of speculation and ruffled feathers...
