    Search and Rescue

We're not officially trained to do S&R, but when you call 911 around here, you get shiny red trucks filled with people who do the best they can. If that includes S&R, so be it. Personally, I've done a water search with help from the Marine Police and Coast Guard (who told us what to do), and...

    taking BP

^^^^One of the smartest things ever said on this forum. Also, you can hear most people's BP by listening in the center of the interior elbow. However, some people's arteries are off to one side. If I'm having trouble getting a BP, I release the cuff completely and feel the joint with two...

    Need help!

Virtually all of us have something that turns our stomachs a little bit. For many people, it's broken teeth, limbs that look curved because of broken bones, breaking ribs during CPR (my personal nemesis), or things moving under the skin (yuck!). You just have to brace yourself and carry on...

    New forum for spouses/families?

Iinteresting...I know that I personally don't want my family that involved with my life as an EMT, but for other families, a support subforum could be a great idea. I'm all for it. Medic's Wife: Try PM'ing ffemt8978 about this.

    Child Abuse Cases

What I learned in my EMT class was to NEVER show any indication that you suspect child abuse while you are on scene. Whatever you do, do not tip off the parents to your suspicions, since they are the child's legal guardians, and can order you to terminate care.

    How does this work exactly

It shouldn't be too hard for him to become an EMT-P again. Virginia (and most other states, I would imagine) have "Reentry programs" designed to help people get back their EMS certs with a minimum of hassle. That's probably the easiest way to resolve the legal and ethical issues here. Also...

    What would you do?

Don't let this person suffer because of HIPPA. Tell the nursing staff (as it was a medical issue that they needed to know about). The nursing home will then probably call the patient's NOK.

    Your First Call

I have only one rule when I'm working as AIC: You do not die or give birth in the back of my ambulance.

    paging Sam!

lol. I'm flattered that you think I'm worth this much attention, but I don't think it's quite worth a thread to itself. Tell you what: I'll jump into the chat room, you can join me, and someone can delete this thread. :)

    "High Schoolers and Heart Attacks..."

It doesn't have to be at anyone's expense. If they're going to be supervised by an AIC, the AIC can keep an eye on them. If they're going to be the AIC themsekves, then the station will undoubtably supervise them until they're sure that they can do the job, just as they would keep an eye on a...

So, my 3yo wanted to try on my EMS gear...

Start their EMS career early enough, and, one day, they'll be paramedics bossing us around! PS: He's adorable. PPS: Where can I get a radio holster like that?

I'll see if I can make a good banner for y'all. I've done some before, and I'd be more than happy to make an EMT Life banner.

    "High Schoolers and Heart Attacks..."

My county has what I consider to be the best mix of volunteer and paid systems. M-F, 6AM-6PM, selected stations are staffed with an ALS crew. During "off hours," i.e. M-F, 6PM-6AM and weekends, we have a paid paramedic for the county (its a very small county) to assist volunteer BLS or ALS...

    "High Schoolers and Heart Attacks..."

That's all well and good in Houston, Texas, but many rural communities like mine depend on teenagers and 20-somethings to get the truck out the door. There are certaintly plenty of teens who don't belong on an ambulance, but blanket generalizations about us are outrageously unfair. The best...
