    Which is better?

I never said it was a good text :) I will say this though, I have read a couple of EMT textbooks and this was the better of the bunch. Got me through NREMT so thats all that matters. Now I can start my real education. The brady website is absolutely horrible. Several contradictions to the text...

    "Don't read the book"

Did the exact same as you with the same result. Definately the best advice once could give - pay attention. Don't be afraid to ask questions either. There were several questions that I wanted to ask only to have another student raise their hand and ask the same exact question. If you are...

    Which is better?

Brady Prehospital Emergency Care 9th Edition page 284: "Mouth-to-mask ventilation is the preferred method to use when performing artificial ventilation because of the following advantages: -One EMT can ventilate using the two handed mask seal technique, achieving a better mask seal...

    "Don't read the book"

No, the book wont keep you out of trouble. Your local Protocols will keep you out of trouble. Not every Basic can do Glucometry, or assist with nitro or epi for example. The book is only to NREMT standards and will get you through the NREMT test. Once hired, knowing your protocols and...

PM Mexdefender, I believe he works for them.

    Which is better?

The "book" will tell you the the pocket mask is preferred over a BVM. Real world though I would be reaching for a BVM. There is no way I am putting my face that close to a patient who is going to vomit at any minute.

    "Don't read the book"

Our text was fairly indepth for a basic level book. That said it doesn't really apply to real world. I think what they meant though was don't read ahead. Reading ahead will confuse you especially early on in the class when you may confuse test questions and what not. The text book is designed...

    Stethoscope hacking.

Is there a website or a source where we can listen to the heart sounds? I would like to learn these but don't know where to start. I've been going to a website that lets me listen to lung sounds so I am getting pretty good at those.

    Stethoscope hacking.

I don't use my stethoscope to "treat" patients. I am a Basic and as a basic my "treatments" are bandaging, splinting and rapid transport to put it simply. My stethoscope is used for BP's and lung sounds. While both can be very important and have and impact on patient outcome, there is nothing...

    Stethoscope hacking.

I can't tell you how many times I have heard EMS people brag about the $250 Danner boots they just bought or the $75 pair of EMS pants with a gazillion pockets, yet you want to jerry rig a stethoscope? You won't be making clinical decisions in the field likely, but it is a VITAL piece of...

    Jump kit

Trust me, I know it. If you advertise yourself as a professional you are held to a higher standard. Good Samaritan Laws were not created to protect professionals. They were created to protect civilians so they would not be scared to provide first aid in an emergency. It is a law benefiting the...

    Jump kit

Here in WA the Good Samaritan Laws go off of your knowledge that you display or admit to. So if you run up to a scene and say "I'm an off duty EMT" then you have established a baseline level of skill and admitted that you are a professional. It would be dependent on the individual scenario...

    Jump kit

For what? Your just asking for legal trouble if you stop to help. Good Samaritan Laws wont help you because you would be implying that you are a professional. I was given a jump kit for graduation and the ONLY time I carry it is when I go quad riding with my friends or family since EMS would...

Paramedics: If you could do it all over again...

Me personally I downgraded to become an EMT. I had a very nice job as a police officer and later as a security officer for a very large Government Contractor. While I spent my youth preparing for a career as a cop (I was a police explorer in high school), it took me getting hit by a car...

Not sure if I should be a firefighter or police officer

As a former police officer myself let me give you some advice. Being a cop is about the most stressful thing you can ever do. The job itself isn't really hard, but you will be scrutinized for EVERYTHING you do. You go hands on with a suspect, better be able to defend yourself in court and in the...

EVIDENCE: show me evidence oxygen as being given by EMS is harming people.

I don't think over oxygenating a patient in the pre hospital setting is going to do major harm. Most of the complications I have heard about occur in the hospital when the patient has been on oxygen for over 24 hours. Not saying there isn't the potential for harm in pre-hospital. I have...

EMS workers allowed to carry weapons...

I am wrong? I have spent years as a cop I got the experience to back me up. The tools we are given are to protect the public, not to protect us from the public. We are the people that get called when the crap hits the fan. It is up to us to mitigate the situation and resolve it according to the...

EMS workers allowed to carry weapons...

I am a CCW holder and a former cop and I can say I don't agree with this. As a cop we are given tools to protect the public. Some of those tools are less lethal others are lethal. Cops don't want to shoot anyone and go through lots of training. Ever hear of the FATS simulator? The other...

How do you make up your cot?

Working IFT we don't store equipment on the cot. The pillow and blanket ride in with us. Making the cot we use a standard cot sheet (not the fitted ones). Using the two person fold it takes about 2 seconds to make the cot literally. Depending on the call will determine if the cot is...
