    A&O status questions

Person, place, time and event is what I ask and seems to be the standard in the medical community. Regardless what you ask you need to keep it consistent so you can remember their response. Were they alert to person and time only? In EMT class, some of the students would ask "who is the...

Investigator: Private ambulances put patients at risk

Seriously? This sounds like someone has an agenda against private ambo's. I have no doubt that there are some shady companies out there. I also have no doubt that their may be other reasons as to what is going on. I have seen numerous fire departments that were just as incompetent...

    Pit Crew CPR

    Pit Crew CPR

CPR changes constantly. In EMT school I had to relearn it from bystander cpr. Now that I work on an ambulance I had to relearn it again as King County has a different CPR than the rest of the country as we are a major research area for the AHA. Currently there are 3 different forms of CPR...

    Not Staying in EMS?

Having been a cop (hence the LEO in my SN) I would think long and hard about your career choice. The law enforcement profession is a wonderful profession and I have lots of great memories and expieriences having been a cop. That said, you couldn't pay me enough to be a cop now. Society has gone...

    practical retest patient assessment

Is this a medical or trauma assessment? There are slight differences in the two. Regardless MOI / NOI is going to determine your need for C-spine. That should be part of your general impression. Don't be afraid to ask the patient if their neck hurts. If they have no neck pain and MOI / NOI...

Always hold on to the stretcher

That looked fake to me. But ouch, real or fake its a good lesson

    Anatomy and quizzes

2 classes a week? Your lucky. My emt class was 3 nights a week 4 hours each and 8 hours on Saturday. 2 Chapters a night were covered and lots of Labs. Quizzes every day and tests every 3 weeks. 4 1/2 months long in total. I can't even imagine how fast some of the advanced courses are.

What do you do when your instructor says something that's wrong?

Actually hes not entirely wrong. An emergency scene can be controlled and restricted to public. Photos can become the property of the jurisdiction and they can confiscate your camera. When I got my Private Investigators license I had to test on the privacy laws. They are a lot more...

    This abomination

I like it. As a primary unit it wouldn't be practical. However, it would be useful for use on crowded freeways or maybe for a private industrial safety team.

Most comfortable ambulance you've worked in?

Ugh I can't stand the rear doors. They aren't the same size and it drives me nuts. Saw one of Tri-med's break down getting onto I-5 from James St in Seattle. Not the best place to break down. Now that I'm with AMR we are driving the Mercedes Benz Sprinter ambulance. So far these are the most...

    Football player Head/Neck Trauma

Why did you remove helmet and pads? Even in EMT school (if you go by the book) they teach you not to remove the helmet or pads unless patient is critical. The helmet and pads will work to maintain netural alignment. Sports medicine also teaches this. Even in the pros they do this and we do...

    Putting all patients on stretcher

Why would you want to put your pt anywhere other than the cot? For starters you lose control of the patient. They can reach equipment, attack you, hurt themselves, etc. Second, the captains chair / bench is more difficult to clean than the cot To me this sounds just like total laziness...

    would you c-spine?

Yup would get the board and padding. Think about the MOI and the force of energy transfer. PT fell on butt where is the energy going to travel? It is going to go up his spine. Possible (unlikely) spinal injury further up the spinal column as a result of transfer of energy. Injury more likely...

    Haha! Excited but nervous......

When was the last time you took an EMT class? Not all classes are created equal and not all classes are "first aid". Just because Basics don't push drugs doesn't mean your smarter than us or that the class is "easy". My EMT class was very heavy on the A&P and Pathology. There is a reason we...

    rural metro washington interview!

I got hired by Cascade in July but didn't get the license approved until August 16th one day after I interviewed for Rural Metro. Cascade does some 911 but it is rare. I recently had a code run all the way to Peaceful Valley that was a 911 call. What I have heard is the Whatcom County MPD...

When will we stop running code?

I don't think the issue is running code too much, rather I think its lack of training and experience. I am probably one of the safest drivers out there when it comes to driving code. Then again, I have a "real" EVOC course under my belt at the WSP Academy. Recently, I had a 40 mile long code...

    rural metro washington interview!

I actually got affiliated with Cascade Ambulance out of Ferndale. Awesome outfit to work for. Even though they are IFT it was an awesome experience. They also do standby's at football games, MMA matches, and races. I applied for both North West and Island Hospital. Northwest had a position...

    rural metro washington interview!

Were you applying for the Fife position? I interviewed when they were hiring for Everett. Impressed the Paramedic evaluating the practical with my scene management - still got the little print out of my compressions. I didn't get the job most likely because I wasn't affiliated at the time -...

    Ever dropped a patient?

Luckily I have never dropped a patient like this. When I was a cop I was working an MCI accident with about 12 people injured...all minor thankfully. Anyway, we had a crapload of ambulances show up and I went to assist one of the female EMTs with lifting a backboarded patient. As I grabbed...
