    the 100% directionless thread

By all means. Let me know when you are in town (or even within a couple of hundred miles). I'll be glad to buy you a drink.:)

    the 100% directionless thread

What a good laid back week. I had 4 shifts of paid vacation. Then worked four OT shifts at time & 1/2. Did a total of three calls. Except for the few hours driving in a blizzard it was almost like being on vacation. Lay back, do nothing, collect money. :) Wonder If I can get away with it again...

    US Paramedic in Canada

A provision in "The Agreement on Internal Trade" was enacted in Aug 2009 that requires all provinces to accept any registration or certificate issued in another province. This just doesn't apply to Paramedics. It is just as applicable to a plumber or welder as well. Some provinces were a little...

    On Call Medic

Speaking of peanuts. I was once told(long before I became a paramedic), by an employee (a foreman), that if I continued to pay peanuts I would continue to get monkeys for workers. He was right I was getting what I paid for.

    On Call Medic

Having people "On Call" is not the way to run a professional service. If there is not enough money to pay to run a service with enough fully staffed units why run one at all. It may have been well established at one time to do "on call", but times have changed and other places have moved on...

    Help with A & P

Human Anatomy and Physiology by Marieb. As many others have said this is a good book to START with. A good understanding of how the body is supposed to work will make more advanced concepts easier to understand. You can go onwards and upwards from there.

    71yoM c/o difficulty breathing

With the info you had I think you made good choices. However as Vene said pts lie or at least don't tell the whole truth. (and it pi$$es me off). An albuterol tx is unlikely to cause harm and often opens up the chest enough to hear crackles or wheezes that couldn't be heard before. I suspect...

    EMT/Paramedics make $51,460.year

I found the fine print. In english describing an area of Siberia. "Most Medics in the Detroit area do make 50+. The catch is, they often work insane hours to make any more than that." Like I said with a good system properly funded you can make over $50k without overtime. A PCP with 5 years...

    Manual Suction Unit

I agree! I'd rather have a turkey baster, a short length of some suction hose and an emesis bag.

    EMT/Paramedics make $51,460.year

I looked but didn't see any funny writing. You don't need to go to Siberia. I've got plenty of snow in my yard. Half of the two lane streets are one lane now and the snowbanks are higher than my truck. This was on a church sign in town "Whoever is praying for snow, You can stop now."...

A Question for Those Down Under

We have recently started an Extended Care Paramedic role. These Paramedics,(all ACPs), received some extra training and refreshers on some procedures. Their function will be to attend low priority calls at nursing homes and provide on scene care and no transport. This has only just started in...

    I can't decide! EMT-I or Paramedic?

Go to P school and get the A Degree. Don't bother being an almost. (EMT-I). Even if you have to wait till Jan to get into a P course, wait. Get a job and save your money for when you're in school. You will still have expenses when you're in school. The more money you have before you start the...

What is the hardest part of school?

When I took my ACP course, which was a distance Ed course, the hardest part was to make myself sit down and study. When I did my PCP course it was full time M-F 8hrs/day. It was easier to come home and study as I was in the study/learning frame of mind. The second hardest part is remembering it...

    Accelerated EMT-P course

If you care at all about being a good and competent medical practitioner, stay away from this and any other short courses. Medicine is far too complicated to be summed up in a couple of months. This type of course does an extreme disservice to the American people. Follow your plan to get...

    Mandated Shifts

No mandatory OT here, except a late call. OT shifts are given to casuals first and if no takers then offered to full time staff. If I show up for work and have no partner I stay as a first response unit until they can find a partner for me or I would be sent somewhere to partner up someone else...

    Clinical preceptors

Well I had a mix of Rns and Drs for preceptors. For my ER shifts I asked the Dept head (a Dr.), if he would be my precepter. Not that the ER nurses weren't good or willing but I wanted to follow the Drs assessments. I wanted to know what was leading them down a certain path with a pts illness...

    US Paramedic in Canada

UKCANUK You are correct. Once a person has valid registration in one Canadian province it will be accepted in all others. There may be a "Jurisprudence" exam but no medical. Each province is different to get registered in. Just because you have registration to work as a medic does not mean...

    Longest-serving paramedic

I worked with a guy when I first started who has a senority date of 1968. He is still working, but I think he is going to retire this year. I also worked with a guy now in his 70's. He was forced to retire when he was 65 (over 10 yrs ago), but fought it and won. I think he worked one day after...
