    East Coast Canada Jobs

I noticed today that Ambulance New Brunswick has posted openings for about 50 full time Primary Care Paramedic jobs all over the province. http://www.ambulancenb.ca/en-us/careers/Pages/jobs.aspx This will mostly be of interest to other Canadians who are looking for jobs and are willing to...

    too old for EMT?

Go for it. I started my PCP when I was 43, then went for my ACP when I was 48. Physically you need to lift a reasonable amount. You do need to lift your end of the stretcher and move people in and out of beds. With a reasonable weight training program, and good technique you will be surprised at...

Partner got mad at me. Was I wrong?

Medicine isn't always about the drugs and procedures. Sometimes the best medicine we have is a sympathetic ear, a kind word and a gentle touch. You appear to have learned this lesson early and have left your partner behind.

    Australian Paramedic moving to America

You can always try Canada. Paramedic is on the National Occupational Classification list. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/index.asp Check with our embassy. The worst they can say is no. Australia - CANBERRA High Commission of Canada Address: Commonwealth Avenue, Canberra...

Here in NS we have five general holidays listed in the Labour Standards Code: New Year's Day, Good Friday, Canada Day, Labour Day and Christmas. These are the minimum number of holidays that employers must provide to employees. Many employers offer more paid holidays. There are some rules about...

Uncontrollable Cramps - First Call - What's up?

According to the gatorade site http://www.gatorade.com/default.aspx#product?s=gatorade-g there is 110mg sodium/240ml or about 450mg/liter. A person guzzeling 3 liters will max out their daily recommended intake. Since that is a "Daily" intake a person drinking alot in say 3 hours is going to...

Uncontrollable Cramps - First Call - What's up?

I few things I'd like to know. How much Gatorade did he drink? How often did he urinate? If he was working hard in 40 degree heat I bet he lost a lot of water through sweating. If he wasn't urinating frequently he probably had a water/ sodium imbalance. He probably took in more sodium than he...

    Repeat Nitro dosing Question

If nitro sl doesn't work for relieving pain after three doses we move to ms. Most of our emergency transports are too short to get into nitro drips. However we do take a number of pts on long transports to the cath lab (100 - 140mi away) quite often. In fact I took one yesterday. The pt was on...

    Gravol

I don't give it very often but do when it is warranted. The hospitals give it before long transports fairly often as well as giving ativan. It seems to work as I haven't had anyone be sick in my unit for a long time. (Knock wood).

    Trip to Europe

My wife and I traveled around europe several times in the 80's. I don't think our pricing info would be any good to you now. However the way we went about it should still be valid. With the internet this should be easier, no more waiting for the mail. We never went for less than 3 weeks and went...

Alright smart people, name that EKG

Well I see 5 consecutive 6 second strips. I am not familiar with a monitor that shows a second smaller waveform just above the main strip or the letter N above it. Perhaps you can enlighten me on this. Consistently I see 6 beats for every 6 seconds so a rate of 60. I see a P for every QRS and a...

    Why do we trust Auto-NIBP?

But the monitor has to correctly read and print the electrical currents in the body so we can read it. We also "Interpret" the b/p numbers the machine gives us. It is ultimately up to us to interpret all the info we gather, both from machines and the MK1 eyeball. Feed it to the human computer...

    the 100% directionless thread

Lets see. Gas is $1.279/Liter x 3.78Liters per US gal = $4.83/gal. Diesel is $1.312/L x 3.78 = $4.96/gal. ($Can). The Canadian and US dollars are almost equal. I think about one cent in the difference with the Can $ being worth slightly more than the US$ the last few weeks.

    Why do we trust Auto-NIBP?

So our expensive well tested equipment gets rough treatment, rode hard and put away wet. What a shock! We don't trust our LP12s etc. to take a b/p but the same machine is trusted to take an accurate ECG which we use to drive our tx of STEMIs etc. Hmmmmm! Do I detect a double std?

    distance from home

When I was first hired 9 yrs ago I took a full time job with benefits 160km (100mi), away, a solid 2 hr drive. We worked 2x24hr shifts /wk. Within two years I was able to transfer home and now live 7km (4mi) away, about a 12min drive. I know many medics who travel 35 - 60 min to work for a 12 hr...

    last nights call

As others have said there is not much info on this call. If the only complaint is numbness and tingling in the leg, you're not going to fix that on scene. The HR of 44 raises questions. I doubt it is normal for the pt and needs to be investigated further. From the info given there was no...

Priority 4 patients (DOA) and your agency?

I look for the obvious. No palapable pulse, no breath sounds, no auscultated heart beat, rigor, dependent lividity, cold in a warm enviroment, a body position or structural change incompatable with life. I rarely need to run a strip of aystole. Dead people tend to exhibit several of the above...

    how to fix EMS

Knock wood! We don't worry too much about lawsuits here. We have insurance and a number of very well qualified Emergency Medicine Drs to back us up. We would have to drop the ball big time to get sued. Most of us have enough education to not do that. You can justify doing or not doing a lot of...

    the 100% directionless thread

Put a black plastic bag on the seat and then some molybdenum grease on the plastic. If anyone touches the seat of your bike the grease will get on their clothes and never come out. Probably a bit safer than coming out with a shotgun.
