    Vehicle Over-the-Side

We seem to be making the news a lot lately. This is the road that heads up into the mountains at the NE corner of our town. Different sections of the road fall under the jurisdiction of us, Arcadia, Monrovia, LA County and the USFS, so calls up there tend to have multiple agencies responding...

    Wacker question

Ahhh, sorry for misunderstanding. I've never seen that particular type, and I didn't even notice they were different until you pointed that out.

Could use some advice with a medical/family problem

I feel for you. I've lost several family members to alcoholism, and my dad was a borderline alcoholic until his brother died from that and drug use when I was in HS. My family seems to have the genetic predisposition for it, so its something I'm very careful about. I'm no teetotaler, but its...

Tell me about it. We bought our house in late '01, and its basically doubled in value. That's great for us as an investment...except for the fact that we can't afford to buy anything bigger here, at least not in a neighborhood we want to actually live in. My wife's never fully "adjusted" to...

How my day went yesterday (first GSW)

It was definitely the most severe trauma case I've been on since the fatal motorcycle accident I was on during my ridealong back during my initial training, and this one was more challenging because the PT was conscious and in a lot of pain. Airway control was our biggest issue due to facial...

    rescue training

We have a volunteer SAR team here in town that we work with quite often on mountain rescue calls. All of their members are EMT-Bs at a minimum and they used to have the same EMS trainer we did (we changed about 6 months ago to a new program...not sure what the SAR team is doing now). The other...

How my day went yesterday (first GSW)

How my day went yesterday (first GSW)

So this is how my day went yesterday. I was covering the ambulance for one of our normal daytime guys (who had to go to a meeting with our dispatch). I had just left home to take the ambulance back at 5 when we got toned for a gunshot victim. Can't go into too much detail obviously, but here's...

    Wacker question

I don't wear them on my belt with my uniform like some people, but I do keep a pair in my turnout pants. We also have them in the top tray of every trauma box and there's usually a couple pairs on the bench seat in the ambulances. Most uniform shops around here carry them. I've even seen them...

Nothing's definite yet. We're hoping to move to either Indiana, Ohio or Northern Kentucky. My wife's family is in Indiana about halfway between Indy and Cincinnati, so we're hoping to be somewhere close (within 3 hours) of them. We're also considering Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa and...

    Removing seated victim from MVA

Doesn't make any sense to me to carry more than one backboard since we can only put one PT in each ambulance anyway. We run Type IIs. If we have more patients than our two ambulances can handle, we call for more ambulances from outside the department. And, quite often, we DO only have one PT on...

    College educations

I think it depends on the university. If the dual major is something you "make up" on your own, you probably get two seperate degrees if you fulfill all of the requirements for both. If its a combined program that's offered by the University where they've structured it specifically to follow two...

    Removing seated victim from MVA

We have a KED on both our ambulances. Of course, we only have one backboard on each too (though in a pinch, we also have a Miller board on each). If we have more than two PTs requiring C-spine, we'd probably be calling for additional ambulances anyway.

    Temperatures

Didn't have a chance to ask the instructor (he didn't show up for our drill), but interestingly, our EMS Battalion Chief recently purchased a digital thermometer with probe covers for our trauma box, so we now have a better option than the Temp-a-dots.

Longer story than I want to get into right now, but basically, my wife and I are planning on moving out of California sometime in the next year or so. After looking at reciprocity requirements elsewhere, and since I have to do a skills test for my County recert by June anyway, I've decided to go...

    Getting your license

There's a county patch for L.A. but you don't get it from the county. In fact, the only place I've found to order it is a patch company in New Jersey. I'm sure there are other places, but that's the only one I know. The county Paramedic patch is gold with red stitching, and its the...

    Exhausted

My wife and I have started making it a point to get out of town and do things with our daughter on the Saturday's I'm not on duty. That seems to have helped a lot because: 1) she's at the right age now to go out and have fun with and 2) it removes the temptation to respond. If I'm at home and...

    Using other skills

California limits Paramedics to BLS skills if they're working with a non-ALS agency or when acting as a good Samaritan. They can only practice ALS skills when they are with a registered ALS agency. We currently have that situation right now with our EMS instructor from UCLA who's a Paramedic...

    Getting your license

For LA County, I got my temporary license (laminated paper with one of my passport photos) about a week after the class. Can't remember when the permanent license (plastic card with the same photo printed on) came, but it was at least a month or so (that's why they do the temporary).
