One confirmed touchdown south of Austin in Hays County and according to our shift report we had a confirmed EF1-2 touchdown in the southeastern part of our county that partially derailed a freight train and damaged quite a few house, trapped two people in one. The NWS hasn't confirmed the...

    Distal femur Ez-IO in peds

Bigger target maybe? And not as easy to drill all the way through? That's dumb. Technically we can access any point we deem necessary with an IO although the two they prefer are tibial tuberosity or humoral head. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Teaching "treat what we see"

I want to say I did somewhere in the realm of 10 twelve hour ICU shifts between PICU, CICU, MICU, TICU and NICN. I thought it was fascinating but some of my classmates were less than thrilled. I actually got used a decent amount in the ICU, skills wise. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Why are Paramedics paid so little?

Yes we do, but county residents pay far less for our bills than out of county residents do. Out of approximately a 15 million dollar budget (IIRC) we are able to recoup ~10 million through billing and only have to cover the other 5 million with county tax money. Those are very rough numbers...

Why are Paramedics paid so little?

We just recently did a cost analysis and found that we only cost ~$12 per person in the county. There are ways of making EMS cost effective. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Shift update: we've watched 2 movies, starting on our third. The sole firefighter and I were sent to a structure fire, there was no structure on fire. We came home and went back to the recliners. It's kind of silly to me that there's only two of us here yet on medical calls he has to bring...

    Motorcycle helmet removal questions

Like @DesertMedic66 said, most full face helmets have a way to remove the cheek pads while the helmet is on. Then have someone in front of the patient slide their hands into the helmet on the sides and hold c-spine while another grabs the helmet, pulls it away from their cheeks and up and off...

Gave a pt an entire bag of IV fluid the other day

I read something interesting recently regarding fluid resuscitation in septic patients, it made even have been on here. It was a number of "myths" that the Surviving Sepsis campaign has in their guidelines and one of them was aggressive fluid resus for everyone. We do 20mL/kg instead of 30 and...

    Austin Tx fire academy

I can confirm this. It's a civil service exam then a giant psych evaluation and digging deep into your personal history. It's not an easy process. As far as physical standards they're pretty straightforward and comparable to any other fire academy. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Lifting for petite people?

Sorry, was being an *** and facetious. I never hesitate to help my engine crews with the dirty work, we've got a different relationship though because we're in house together. There's been a lot of good advice in here, technique trumps strength all day every day but you do need to have some...

    CAAS Accreditation

A lot of CAAS is operational stuff that Paramedics deal with. My agency just applied for and received our CAAS accreditation and it was a process that took upwards of a year. It's not an easy thing to do. The standards are the standards and many agencies are going to have to change operations...

    Headsets for ground ambulances??

Austin uses them. Only way for partners to communicate back and forth when one is in back and one is driving. Their cabs and boxes are completely separate. I wish we had them. My hearing is slowly but surely getting worse.
