How things are run here as well. In the city the fire department runs the show and has a contract with SW ambulance to transport BLS calls. So they get called quite often for things they don't want to deal with. Rather unfortunate.
Calculus/Physics in EMS? I think that's way overkill and wouldn't waste a dime. A&P and basic level biology/chemistry classes are more practical. But all that depends on whether or not your program even requires any of that. Mine did not require anything, but having college credits helped...
If I were ultimately aspiring to work as an MD/RN I would bypass the Medic route entirely unless you have the extra time and money. Could just go the extra year and get an associates in nursing.. More valuable given your long term career goals. Also can get your medic cert as an RN without doing...
That's the problem with the skills stations. I'm not against them, but your just memorizing a sheet and graded on your acting skills. In the field your not going to verbalize the various steps and your also not necessarily going to do things in order according to those sheets under certain...
Yeah, that would be my guess. Fortunately I was let in on a little secret and advised not to take the test on a Friday or before a holiday to avoid the dreaded wait! Hope the time goes by quick for you. Try not to stress too much.
I took my test around the same time you did and I didn't get the results until the following day at around 6AM. But.. since you took your test on Friday you might actually have to wait until Monday to get your results due to the weekend. Hope I'm wrong though!
Sounds like an interesting idea.
I can definitely see how the FF's weren't keen on the idea. They have a point in the fact that even though they are assigned to a medic truck they are still responsible for carrying out fire ground activities and backing up fire crews when personnel is...
Ah, man.. so sorry to hear that. I definitely feel for you. I take it you already tried to contact the last test site? Maybe your right and it was a mistake on their end. I'm not sure how successful it would be trying to get it sorted after the fact the results were posted, but I think your...
Fire/Medics usually make more due to the fact they work for the city and many departments consider the Medic position to be a paid promotion. In the neighboring state of Arizona they make about $60,000 a year, so it probably averages out to the same when you factor in the cost of living/overtime.
Agreed with all that's been said. Have you considered doing a ride along with an EMS organization or a Fire Department? I can tell you that even though I have been fortunate enough to have grown up around the fire service and already had a general idea of what goes on, it wasn't until I actually...
Hoping to join you boys soon. Screening process starts In a month. Only one accredited Medic program within a hundred miles and they only run a class of ~30 once a year. Just an entrance test, skills test and panel interview to knock out. Keeping the fingers crossed I score high enough to land a...
