    Starting EMT BASIC soon!

It's quite likely that there will be unmotivated people in your classes. Don't give them the time of day or let them distract you from your goals. Focus on the material, kick butt on your clinicals, ask lots of questions, research anything you encounter that interests you, and do some volunteer...

    Denver Health P-School

I can't speak for the DH program, but I will say that everyone I've met at HealthOne EMS is pretty amazing. I'll second Chaz90's comment about Dennis, the paramedic program director. He's a wealth of knowledge, very focused and demanding, but still extremely approachable. His lectures are never...

    Why Are You an EMT?

I had always planned to do something medical when I got sick of cooking, and that day came sooner than expected. I liked being hands-on, the energy and teamwork in kitchens, but thought it would be more pleasant if the vagrants, junkies, and drunks were my patients rather than my coworkers...

    kidney stones and a bgl?

This^^. The way I understand it, the fight or flight response we experience during extreme pain events like a kidney stone causes the liver to release more glucose, that in turn isn't metabolized, because pt is writhing in pain rather than running from a threat. Hence, hyperglycemia. Is this...

    Services around Denver,CO

If you're willing to live somewhere other than Denver in Colorado, AMR runs 911 service in Boulder, and there are some services in Northern Colorado that have a great reputation. Denver Health is a pretty difficult service to get on with from what I have heard. Really over-saturated market for EMS.

    EMT-Basic Classes in Colorado

Welcome to EMTLife! There's a 2 1/2 month program through HealthOne that includes 44 hrs of clinical time. They have a great program with a strong reputation. Nothing is cheap in Colorado, but it's not a bad value: http://www.healthoneems.com/course_pdf/2013/2013_EMT.pdf While you're there...

Giving your phone number out on scene?

Nope. Don't do it. You're in a position of power, and she's vulnerable. Never a good combination.

    Intranasal Narcan for BLS

Don't shoot up the messenger  It is different when a person is on-duty and acting in an official capacity than when a civilian is medicating a close friend or family member with a known history. That said, as an online protocol with all necessary contraindications in districts where...

    Intranasal Narcan for BLS

Colorado even goes one step further. If you are a civilian, you can now obtain prescription narcan after a 1-hour class and administer it in the field. Drug policy here is extremely progressive...

    Developing CE classes

There is a non-profit in my city that provides syringe exchange, substance abuse counseling, and healthcare services specific to IVDU populations. They're looking for alternative sources of revenue to fund their operating expenses, and the idea of teaching CE classes came up as one possible...

Have a better interview. Some thoughts...

Well said! I especially like the volunteering idea. Every organization like that needs people willing to spend some time and help out.

    Non-trafitional Jobs

Good point. I'm anxious to see how Paramedics are employed outside the prehospital setting in the coming years.

    Non-trafitional Jobs

One of the major systems in the Colorado has started using Paramedics in the ED working in their full scope, plus some nursing responsibilities that they're trained in. It's been going about 3 months now and seems to be pretty successful so far. Anyone else seen this? They're essentially acting...
