    Dumb moment...

Had a very dumb, but funny, moment not too long ago... I’m a full-time EMT and a full-time medic student now This happened at one of the stations I ride at for class. In my county, County Fire Rescue is the cream of the crop. It’s where everyone wants to be. Fire and EMS are combined, so all...

    Social Quandaries

I spoke about this same issue with my mother recently. Because let's be real: my mom is my absolute best friend. I tell her everything, and know that she'll love me regardless. She told me recently that I need to work on being "vocal". And my response was "why?" I was raised to be honest and...

    Social Quandaries

I should have mentioned that the vast majority of my friends don't have health insurance, which is why they don't have PCPs and why I tell them to go to the hospital. But I hear you. And will rethink my circle of friends. So far, I have stopped going to mutual hangouts and deactivated my...

    Social Quandaries

Since I've joined the EMS profession, I've been working more and more. I've been taking on a lot of OT shifts because I'm trying to save for paramedic school, but that's been killing my social life. When I'm with my "regular" friends, they go on and on about their jobs, and their kids, and their...

first call of the day is...

They also asked if the EKG was REALLY necessary. I was very tempted to answer: "Nope!! This is for my own amusement." Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

first call of the day is...

Pt: I'm having chest pain. Me: Is it localized to one side? Does it feel sharp? Shooting? Pt: It just hurts. Me: Any hx of heart issues in the past? (as I'm applying EKG leads) Pt: No. Why are you asking so many questions?? Me: [emoji19] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    EMS employees are so unhealthy

I smoke cigarettes and drink a lot of energy drinks. Both of which I am trying to cut back on. I am also on the fluffy side. But I'm okay with that. Doesn't mean I'm a "fat slob." Because I'm definitely a touch OCD. "A place for everything, and everything in its place" or I get super cranky...

    Toast

I work at an urgent care clinic as well as school and other things. But this happened recently at my clinic: Pt checks in for nausea, vomiting, loose stool, etc. PA there dx's him with bacterial gastroenteritis. Tells him to eat toast to help quell sx as well as take the rx meds given. I go to...

You know you are an EMT/Paramedic when...

Did this watching a show. It involved an MCI -- train crash -- and during triage, the medics had time to sit over a pt and talk about their feelings of drama in their personal life. I was sitting there like, "That's not how this works. That's not how any of this works."

    What are the chances?

Apparently, my VP shunt is a newer version of technology. I've got a nice lump on my head where the valve is, but as my hair grows back, it becomes harder and harder to notice. My neuro cleared me for fire academy. With the valve being right under my scalp, I was worried about what extreme heat...

    What are the chances?

My peripheral vision has come back enough to where I can drive during the day. I'm not too comfortable driving at night yet, so I don't. But I'm not giving up on this. I really appreciate all the input. Every day I get a little better, so I'm staying positive. :)

    What are the chances?

I figured. One thing I loved about riding on rigs was that it was a constant change of scenery. I don't like being stuck inside too long. But according to my field of vision tests, my peripheral is coming back slowly. VERY slowly. It may never be the same or back to 100%, but I'm still hoping. :)
