Hello all I was wondering what have you guys heard of the EMS career in Kentucky from pay to actual cost of living in Kentucky specifically our 30 min or so from the Louisville area? I have been pursing firefighting here in CA for a couple years now. I have CFSM FF1 and IFSAC probroad Certs for firefighting. I was a volunteer firefighter for two years in CA, I work as an EMT in a very busy private 911 EMS system in southern CA for two years, and I work part time as an EMT for a fire department here is southern CA. But my girlfriend and here family are moving to Kentucky about 30min from the Louisville area within two years and I’m debating to go with them but I’ve been pursing Fire/EMS out here in Southern CA. I’m going to paramedic school this January and the reason I’m asking is because I’ve always wanted to be a firefighter/Paramedic here in southern CA. So I wondering if Fire/EMS is even comparable in Kentucky as a career option in relation to pay and cost of living in Kentucky?

I don't live in kentucky but I know enough to know that the cost of living is fairly cheap, on par with Indiana. Your money will go a lot further here than in California. Louisville is more expensive but the further away you get, the cheaper it will get.

Very few ground services in Kentucky have RSI, and they recognize NREMT for reciprocity.

Do you think that it would be a good choice to leave California tho considering I’ve already done so much and have a foot in the door with a few departments already? In California I have the potential to earn 100,000-200,000 with overtime as a firefighter medic, engineer, captain, etc.

That's a personal decision. You expect anywhere from 40,000-65,000 as a medic in Kentucky and cost of living is around 30% lower.

Don't forget to think about retirement. Retire with a California pension and you can pretty much go anywhere on the planet.

Retire with a Kentucky pension and you're stuck in Kentucky. Or somewhere else with a low cost of living.

Stay far far away from Louisville. I left there in 2016. Things were bad there then but they’re descending into chaos now.
