Hey guys , im a newcomer to the forum and ive decided to go ahead and get the ball rolling to get into EMT School. My mother was an OR Tech in the US Amy in the 80s and my father has been in the medical feild about the same amount of time. He started here in town at St Vincents , then moved to the fire department as an EMT/Paramedic. Now is currently a Triage Paramedic at Mayo Clinic in the Emergency Room. So its easy to see where my decision was greatly influnced. My question is , i wasnt the best person at paying attention mostly so i want to give myself as much of a leg up before i actually start my courses. What is some good study material worth reading before hand to set me up better before i start ??? Any help is greatly appreciated !!

EMT is really just a basic first aid class with some extras.

Study the material in your book and you'll be fine. Pay attention to med terms and the limited anatomy they teach in the class. That's where most students struggle.

Pay attention during lectures and skill stations, read ahead and use the study tools.

It's not rocket science, it's the entry level medical equivalent to working the grill at McDonald's.

I recently just finished my EMT class and passed the NREMT last week. I would recommend to go over vitals signs for all ages including pediatrics. Another thing is look up NREMT skill sheets online and print them out and go over them. This will help you out a lot. Show up to class, READ the chapters they assign, and stay focused and you'll be fine.
Good Luck!

My best advice to anyone thinking about attending EMT class is to buy a copy of the textbook that will be used in your course
and read it from cover to cover before class starts. Once class begins, you will likely not have time to absorb the material in a quality manner. My course was 12 weeks long, three days per week, often with three or more chapters covered per week. I learned enough of the basics to pass each test, but it was rushed. Luckily, I was able to read the first half of the book before the class began, but wished that I had read it all.

One is certainly allowed a measure of pride in choosing this occupation, but it must be tempered with a hearty dose of reality. The reality being that EMT is little more than an advanced band aid course. Any ideas to the contrary are ill founded. This isn't a paragod opinion, as most of us agree that paramedic programs are severely lacking in actual education as well.

That's why I went ahead and got a Master's degree in something else.
