Hospital Based EMS

Hey everyone. I am looking for some feedback as to hospital based EMS systems.

I am by no means new to EMS, those of you that know that already, but this is my first time with a hospital based ambulance system.

Any feedback on this for me? Like, not like? How was the pay to surrounding EMS systems? Protocols?

This is 2 hours away form where I live, so they have worked the schedule out for me for 24 hours on, 18 hours working in the hospital 6 hours call, 24 hours calls, and 24 hours on again. So I work 3 days in a row and I am done for the week and I am able to stay at the hospital.

Also the medics at the hospital also double as RT's at night and the CRNA as well since neither are on at night.

This is a smaller system with a town of < 6000 and about 1000 ems calls a year and the ER sees about 4800 pt's a year.

Feedback would be great

Hows the pay? I'm pretty familiar with hospital-based systems as above, and where we were constantly getting shafted at Culberson was the call vs on-call. Getting browned out but being on-call meant you were working for $60 a day, and was pretty common from the full timers who were on overtime.
Staying in the hospital is a good way to save. My current agency does it right.

A lot depends on your ER staff. I like to help, but getting paged to mop and do CNA stuff is frustrating, especially on 24s. "Looking busy" is also a big deal at some places, where you're expected to mimic an 8 or 12 hour load on a 24.

Medical control is closer, but hospitals down here often direct us to take nearly everything, regardless of definitive care. For example, I can't bypass T or C to take a stroke to Las Cruces or scene flight it, and I might get canned for doing it with an active MI. They use EMTALA to justify shoddy care, but from my snapshot, that's a systemic issue.

Volunteers and locals are a bit crazy in a good way. you'll understand.

Honestly, I prefer private and fire to hospitals, but I like pay, and bigger hospital systems, IE ETMC EMS, are nearly independent.

I'm starting at 15.60/hr, full benefits, 20 days pto.

Call pay is half your base pay. They also do a bonus pay of 50 per transfer once a year.

That's not horrible, and it leaves time for school. A lot of what I don't like about hospitals is management treats us like nursing aides.

It sounds like that's kinda what is used to be like. They just started letting medics give meds and what not. So it sounds like things are getting better.

Yep...I'm pretty done with the hospital-based thing myself. Paramediates are not the gift they think they are.
