yea... its another one of those interview threads...

So after talking with an Acadian recruiter for a few days, he called me up today and told me he'd like to get me in for interview soon. He said for me to call him tomorrow and we'll get a time setup for next week (he was very considerate of the fact that I have finals coming up, although I am already prepared and an interview won't get in the way).

THEN I checked the voicemail of my house's landline. AMR called and asked if I could come in Monday for interview and to call back. The company I want to work for most is Acadian... what do I tell AMR? Do I call and ask for a later interview date? Or just tell them I have another interview at this time?

Then comes to the whole interview process. I am not worried about the physical fitness test, but am somewhat concerned about the oral interview. I have only had one other interview in my life and it was with Best Buy. The questions asked completely blindsided me and I didn't do too well, I was 18. I think now I can handle those types of questions better, but what do I wear? I don't have anything too snazzy. The best thing I currently have is one of my neutral colored Ralph Lauren or Lacoste polo style shirts, tucked in with a brown leather belt and khaki pants. Would that suffice? I really want this job, and I might be over thinking it a bit lol.

See if you can Scedule for both Interviews, because with todays economy id take all the interview you can get, both Acadian and AMR are well established companies and i would give a pretty penny to work for them.

Heres an article that will help you out with the interview questions:

http://firelink.monster.com/benefits/articles/8703-15-toughest-interview-questions-and-answers

by far the most common interview question is Tell me about your self

you wanna tell them about why your good for the job here and tell them about your past work experince and how it relates to the job

for the interview, i would wear a nice dress shirt with a tie and nice dress pants, and dress shoes, if possible id wear a nice dress jacket too. pretty much business formal

good luck!!

Just because you interview with someone doesnt mean youll get the job or have to take it if offered. Youll look like a fool is you tell AMR you cant interview with them and than Acadian doesnt offer you a spot.

Interview to your hearts content until you get to a company that you like that wants you, but dont be afraid to take a job at another company in the meantime.

I want to work 911 in my local city but got a job with AMR an hour away till I get with the 911 I want.

Just be respectful of the companys time and youll be ok.

I was afraid of the dress suit suggestion lol but I figured it. It's all good, I can pull it off. I have everything actually, I just remembered it. I need to press it and make sure it all fits and get any lint off it (pet peev of mine). Hehe, perfect time to wear that nice Gucci tie the mother purchased for me ;)

I was making sure it was a good idea to take both interviews. What do I tell AMR if both companies offer me a spot? "Thank you very much for your time (etc etc etc), but I have taken a job offer elsewhere"? I'll probably take AMR's interview on Monday and then go for Acadian's interview on Wednesday, so long it fits the schedule of my recruiter. I'm very thankful just to have them calling me.

Oh, and AMR does 911 here. Not sure if you refer to AMR doing IFTs in your area, but both AMR and Acadian do EMS in areas around me. All of our EMS in the local region are private.

definitly interview with both places, like linuss and musicmedic said, you may not get the job with Acadian. (i am looking into acadian too in fall and i would love a job with them but, dont want to only rely on them. I would try to wear a button down shirt, tie and jacket if possible. (dress to impress sounds stupid but people will take you more seriously). With that being said, maybe bring a change of clothes with you in case you have a physical or lift test and dont want to do it in a tie and jacket. Just make sure it is comfortable but professional at the same time. From what i heard, its nothing major and do able in what you interview in.

If Acadian and AMR both offer, and you choose one over the other, just tell them "Thanks for considering me but I got an offer at ____ and want to pursue that one right now".

Don't burn bridges, you never know if you'll have to change companies in the future, contracts are won and lost all the time, and also EMS is a small community.

Yep, that's what I was thinking. I really do appreciate all the advice from everyone. I'll be interviewing with AMR on Monday, and Acadian on Wednesday barring a schedule problem.

I'll let everyone know how it went and what it was like, for both companies. I've been pursuing a shot at a job since I passed registry in March, so I'm very appreciative of the interest that these two companies have shown in me already.

and yes, with Acadian there will be a PFT, but from my understanding in a different location and date.

Update

I completed my interview with Acadian today at 9am in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

The recruiter began with asking me if I had any questions, I did so I asked them.

The interview went underway, standard interview questions. A little different than the first interview I had, but definitely nothing exactly tailored towards EMS. In some questions he would ask (for example) "In EMS you must deal with high stress situations, name me one situation in which you experienced high stress on the job, and how you managed it." Upon completion of the interview, he requested my cards (NREMT/CPR/DL/SS) and sat me at a table where I took a series of timed, 5minute tests. The first test was a reading/matching test. It would give a scenario laden with information, and give a series of replies and you would mark correct or incorrect. Example

"On March 22, 2002, the company bought $500 of an item, at $5/lbs........"

1) 3/33/04 Correct or Incorrect
2) five hundred dollars of item Correct or Incorrect
3) four dollars per pound

Of course, they were much longer but you get the idea. They are not hard but attempt to trick you. You can't jump and mark one instantly because you may make yourself look not too bright

Next up was a matching type test. It would give a series of categories and you would mark each option under a category

01 Filing
02 Customer Service
03 Custodial
04 Maintenance

1) Lady with carpet cleaning equipment
2) A/C repairman

You get the point, this really had no trickery in it.

Next up was basic math skills. It ranged from long addition to subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, percentages, etc. Fairly simple, if you are like many people and haven't seen stuff like long division or fractions since school, just brush up on it. Nothing complicated.

The last test was 10minutes long, composed of word math problems. I could tell several of the questions are meant to trick you.

Once that was over, we shook hands and he sent me off to an occupational medicine clinic for a drug test. Once the grades of the tests, my references, back ground check, and drug test all come back he said he would give me a call. Personally, I don't feel like they're going to bite. This is my second interview ever, and while I feel I made a LOT of improvement over my last one, I had some weak areas that may hurt me. I prepared myself on many questions I think I would hear, and it was those questions that I would have brain farts on. I knew what I wanted to say but I had somewhat of a hard time getting it out at first. Looking back, wish I would have settled down a little bit more before the interview.

Now for AMR. They called back today less than an hour after I arrived home from Baton Rouge. They are interested in me interviewing in a temp part time job, working under BP assisting the clean up crews in the oil spill. I like this idea, I'm waiting on her to call back with an interview time.
