Pursuing nursing??

Is anyone else in here going to pursue nursing as a career field instead of being a career EMT?

I am considering nursing school over paramedic school. I know I don't want to stop at being just an EMT-Basic.

I used to be a EMTB years ago, and I am getting recertified so I can work as one while I go to school.

Any thoughts? Anyone else doing the same thing?

Go go go!!!

I really wish I had done nursing instead of Paramedic, especially since I could've challenged the paramedic exam as a nurse.

You can always come back and do both, but if you are considering nursing school GO you will kick yourself for not doing it sooner if you go to paramedic school instead.

I got my basic in nursing school. Graduated in may and have Ben workin two jobs. In an ICU at a level3 trauma center and on a cardiac stepdown at a level 1 trauma center. I still plan on getting my paramedic patch.

How was that working while going to nursing school? I am just nervous about the lack of time. It might be my only option since I have to work to make ends meet financially...

Yeah, I have been kicking myself for years. Just haven't been pursuing it as hard as I should have, only because the outside influences I had in my life at the time weren't good ones.

Thanks for the encouragement!!

Luckily my wife helped alot and I worked part time. I did my basic online, so pretty much just studied on my down time. You can do it, just keep sight of the goal.

Two distinct professions. Remember as an RN you can also come work on the helicopter or ambulance doing CCT if you miss the rig and stations.

You cannot go wrong pursing nursing. However if EMS is where your heart is, you can't go wrong following your heart.

smart move on your part, nursing is where it's at, I mean unless your going to do the fire thing paramedic is really a wasted step, plus your going to make a ton of cash.

I'm thinking of changing my major to nursing, but making EMS my main job, seeing as that is where my heart is. I would basically be working 2 jobs.

See, nursing has always been in my heart... for many years. But the opportunity has been slim because I would be required to go to school full time. There is no part time program here where I live.

SO, the only option is to get into a job which gives me some flexibility (such as an EMTB) to make ends meet... then go to school for nursing (with a little luck, hopefully I will get in without waiting too long)

The problem with nursing is that there are no jobs for new nurses.

Luckily, i've actually gotten two of them as a new nurse.

check out www.allnurses.com and do a search for new grads and jobs.

People are freaking the F out right now. If you aren't already in nursing school, I suggest taking a long hard look at how much you'd be willing to do 3-4 or more years of school and NOT have a job immediately after you graduate.

Best bet for nursing school in my opinion is to land a job as an EMT, or CNA, or Patient Care Tech at a hospital where you want to work so that you have an advantage over other students who will graduate in your cohort.

Uh, that's exactly what I will be doing. Working as an EMT WHILE going to nursing school. And, I will have a job as a nurse where I graduate, because I already work for a Hospital Affiliated company, and where I live... there are NUMEROUS hospitals and clinics, not to mention many new grad jobs. I have been posting to allnurses.com for about 4 years now.
