I got my paramedic license in the middle of March. All the way through school I was told that landing a medic job would be easy... "Everyone is looking for Paramedics." I'm finding that's not the case. <_< I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this problem???? I live in Kansas City and you would think that a large city would have more opennings!!

It is very difficult right now. budget cuts and economy and all.

I live in SoCal and theres nothing out there right now. Ive had my license since end of April had a few interviews (mostly fire jobs) and turned in some applications but nothing yet.
I also kept hearing "everyone needs medics" too. bummer. i hate being poor

I would say "Move to Texas", but I want a job when I graduate in a year.

I would love to move to Tx

There are plenty of jobs in the mid-west the problem is most are expecting to make 6 figure salaries and do not understand the costs of living is not the same. Most Paramedics in these areas are ranging from mid thirties to sixties.

There are plenty of jobs all over the place...

but many of these places are not paying survivable wages...and if you have a family just stay in school and become a nurse...

Yeah, I got a little boy on the way. I was thinking of going back to school to be an RN. I just would hate to back to school, and right now I can't afford it. I'm sitting on my paramedic license and just working at Sears. :glare:

I found a job working at a hospital as a floor tech. Both for the experience for when I go to nursing school and the money. Don't looks for just a paramedic job. I plan on staying here for a while, then eventually go PRN to work on a bus full time

Has anyone ever looked into the College Network? They have a bridge program to go from Paramedic to RN. I talk to them about it, it's an online course that takes about 2 years. Anyone have any insight on this stuff??

excelsior college in NY does that program. I know 3 medics that went that route...they use your paramedic school clinics as their RN clinicals...

Everyone is discussing RN as a way to immediately find a job. In my area it is much easier to find a job as a Paramedic than a RN. Most hospitals are on a hiring freeze and most of the RN positions are in long term or nursing homes.

I usually judge the demand of nursing jobs by the number of travel or agency type request for nurses and I have not had one for a few weeks which is very unusual.

Was there an immediate cessation and abundance of nurses? No.

I have seen this before, and yes within the next few years there will be a demand again. As well, how much did one really investigate of getting a Paramedic job?

I really do not recommend any online courses. Most Paramedic to RN requires one to have at the least of 2 years clinical experience and the most they wave is one semester. Be sure that your state will accept the online RN or accelerated too. Just because one has the license RN does not automatically means acceptance within a state. It is not alike EMS and where you attend does matter.

Be sure your state will accept their program as it has became under scrutiny lately. Many will accept with additional clinical hours or additional college credit.

It is a very expensive alternative way, and the success rate of completion is very low.

Just a general statement...I can understand going to school to get your RN, but if you recently graduated Paramedic school, it seems that many are giving up before obtaining their original goal... What gives?

Not really planning on giving up on the original goal. I'm just trying to think ahead. The thing is that I have a child on the way, I have a paramedic license and I'm stuck working at Sears. (I am grateful to HAVE a job, even if it doesn't pay well.) It's just frustrating!

Stay at Sears...It probably pays more

I wish I was kidding

Unless things have changed drastically in the KC area since I was there, it's never been easy to get a Paramedic job in that area. MAST and AMR have the whole area locked down, and as far as I understood MAST tends to hire Paramedics that went through their school before they hire anyone else.

I believe several of the smaller hospitals in KCMO will hire Paramedics into their ERs to supplement the RNs, have you looked into that? Warning though, I was there 3 or so years ago, so things may have changed.

Not sure where you are. Rush University Medical Center in Chicago has critical care jobs. This might be a good transition bridge. Good luck.
