Hi I am a college student new emt-b who wants to spend a summer where she is needed. I at first thought the rural areas would need emt's the most, but I am quite lost on how to go about looking for this. I just want to be of help (sadly being a college student means i'd rather have at least a slightly paid gig) and i am willing to go pretty far out there in terms of wild and untamed (rural or urban!). I am from a major city, but there are so many emt's here that theres no real need.

my thoughts on where it was needed were: reservations, logging communities, mining towns, etc.

Anyone know where they are just looking for help?
thanks!

Hola!

hello i did the same thing, i live in a big city in texas but i looked around cuz i feel the same way u do. Here in texas there are some private ambulance companies that do EMS for sourrounding counties, u know the ones with small towns and stuff. so u might wanna ask fire depts. on who does ems for the county u live in or surrounding counties, See if u they are accepting. AND VOLUNTEER, i work for 1 private company but i volunteer at fire depts. around my big city, and sometimes they hire! plus ems for private ambulance companies in rural counties is fun! u got all the cool calls, well sometimes. hit me back!

Awsome! I had a feeling someone out there had done this before. Im really trying to get out in the middle of nowhere, but when i google search places im never sure what to look for. Did you contact the fire departments for the rural areas first and then inquire as to what ambulance services worked in conjuction wiht them? Im also curious if when you are in a rural area you tend to bring patients to community clinics rather than a major hospital. I feel horrible because i dont know what the major picture is when it comes to rural operations so Im not quite sure who i should be approaching

hhmmmmm...

Well i kinda lucked out, the private ambulance company i work for in the big city has another station in a city 2 hours away which is rural area, and we dont transport to clinics, we transport to hospitals close by which are usually 30 mins code 3. our trauma 2 hospital is 25 mins code 3, and our trauma 3 hospital is 35 to 45 mins far goin code 3. We usually do the trauma 3 hospital cuz all the calls we get are mostly accidents,(due to the highways and travelers.) as for locating one, before i found out about my company, i looked all over the internet, trying searching certain county websites, or even call fire depts of cities in rural areas, they usually have an idea, or they should. Where i work, the fire dept. has nothing to do with us, we are in different offices across the city, which is like 3 mins cuz the city i work out of is so freaking small compared to the city i live in :). hmm i hope i answered some of ur questions, ask me anything else and i will answer to as much as i know! nice talking with u keep in touch! let me know if u find anything!
