Hi everyone my name is Greg and i'm currently a sophomore in high school. For next school year i chose to take Fire and EMS which if completed correctly will give me the opportunity to get and EMT-B and several other certifications. I am planning on going to a 4 year college and was wondering what sort of majors/careers a EMT certification could help with. I am not that interested in going to Med School or Nursing and was thinking more along the lines of Protective services or Law Enforcement ( from the looks of it Tactical EMS looks the most interesting out of anything.). if anyone could give some advice in suggested Careers or Majors that would be great.

EMT on an ambulance or event stand by, Medical Assistant, or ED tech. Thats about it. SWAT medic as a brand new EMT-B? no lol

Sorry if i Wasn't more clear, the class i am taking next year as a Junior in High school will get me an EMT-B, but i am interested in continuing it further after that, I was wondering if someone could give me insight into possible further education in College and Possible careers that would be helpful with having an EMT certification and what sort of certification i would need, I'll try and rephrase my first post.

Sorry if i sound ignorant about any of this, most of my knowledge is based off the course outline and the internet.

As far as careers, EMT-B opens the door to working on an ambulance and eventually becoming a Paramedic or working as a FF/EMT for a fire department, that's about it.

It'll get you jobs, such as an ER Tech, medical standby for events, theme park or water park EMT or security guard EMT.

Other than that it's not really going to do a whole lot for you. Most law enforcement agencies wont give a rat's *** if you're EMT certified other than it satisfying your first aid/responder certification requirement.

The vast majority of SWAT medics are Paramedics with lots of field experience. Not impossible for an EMT-B to be a TEMS provider but it's pretty rare. There's an awesome thread about tactical medics that's active that can be found here: http://www.emtlife.com/showthread.php?t=32059

EMT with fast track you through AIT to be a medic in the military by a couple of weeks. Basically allow you to skip the EMT portion and go straight to the combat medic side of it.

Hope this helps.

If your looking into a 4 year degree EMT is a pre-req for Paramedic, but only around 20-25 universities in the USA offer 4+ year degree's in EMS.

I am not sure if it will contribute towards a fire science degree because I know very little about the fire service. A lot of FD's have EMT's though so it might. Same with a LE related degree.

It might look nice on your resume for any of the emergency services but I am not sure how much LE will care.

It could open up doors for you to be a volunteer at a rural FD or an EMS dept and get exp. Depending on your university many of them also have an EMS stations the students staff who are EMT's.

If you keep track of how many patient contact hours you make as a working EMT you can use it as "health care/patient contact" experiences for PA school

If your thinking about Police work maybe look into criminal justice degree's with a minor in sociology or psychology?
