What are your protocols for DUI when off duty?

very simple. Don't drink and drive or don't get caught having done so.

If you don’t mind me changing the question around just a bit, but what if a new EMT-B, just coming into the field already has a DUI (it happened a while back with nothing new on his or her recorded, not even a speeding ticket), even have a prayer on found a company that will even hire this person??

Depends how old.
For NM it has to be at least 5 years old. If it's less than that, don't even bother

The company that hires you will have to insure you. If you have a DUI on your record, you are well aware of the increased cost of insurance with that present. If the company has the option of hiring you at that cost, or hiring someone else who will cost them less.. who should they pick? In some cases the insurance company will not insure you with that on your record, so your value to the company is much less with you being unable to drive their rigs.

Fair or not.. whether it was a momentary indiscretion or not.. whether you are really sorry and promise never to let it happen again or not.. it's a fact. It's on your record and it will have consequences
