Hi all,

I want to get into the EMS career. I am not sure where to start. I have taken a look at the state website for EMS that I reside in (NY) and the list of schools. Where do I start or how do I start? Is it best to stop by one of these schools for more information?

You can try doing a ride-along, but those are becoming scarce these days due to company policy, law, etc.

If you really want to jump into this then find the nearest EMT school (that's reasonably priced) and figure out what's needed to sign up.

You may want to do some research on job prospects and general pay.

Wow, that was something else. Made me tear up a bit.

When I was 5 I wanted to be a medic, I even have a picture from kindergarten of me sitting in an ambulance with all the oversized gear on and a ten foot grin. But then the parents split up and life happened and being a cop was my big thing from grade 6-12. I got a job doing large venue security and after a year of that, I figured out EMS was really where I belonged. Been working towards it ever since, which I'm not gonna lie, hasn't been very long.

I found my bone.

Thanks

I'm still in basic training, but what I did was first looked around to see about CPR/First aid/AED training. It's what really sparked my interest in EMT training (took 3 various first aid classes my last semester at school). What I did, next, was then looked around in hospitals. I think it varies per hospital, but some will have training. Check around on the website at a local hospital, or even the information desk. You could also check around at firehouse headquarters for possible training (though in my area in Indiana, they are doing away with that). If worst comes to shove, you can always try a local state college or school. One that appeals to blue-collar (gotta love that term) jobs and certifications.

Those are the best places I can say to start right now. Best of luck to you! :) It's very rigorous, in my experience. Be prepared!

Volunteering is a good way to start -- you can ease into EMS without making a full-time commitment. If it's not for you, you'll know it. Many (most?) volunteer agencies offer in-house training and sponsorship for state certification.
