Hey everyone, this is for all the NC people. My wife and I are both paramedics in Ohio. We've both lived in Ohio our entire lives, growing up wasn't bad I guess but the adult life is something else. If you know anything about Ohio, you probably know that most people hate living here. There's just always been that "stuck in Ohio" mentality, and nobody ever leaves. We're tired of the cold and rainy falls, sub zero salt scattered wet snow winters, and the springs that are more of just a fall and winter mix. But most of all were tired of the very limited and competitive EMS job market. I am currently a full time fire/medic for a dept that I volunteered for, for several years. They finally decided to hire a couple full time people and I was lucky enough to have gotten a spot after 7 years of pure volunteer. It's an ok gig but the pay is not worth me staying in Ohio. We're not big city people, we love the outdoors and like occasional trips to the ocean. But job stability is the key. What areas would you recommend I look at. I'm looking for 911 ems or fire job. Not crazy about transport services. I know there are a lot of county ems services down there which I love. That's unheard of where I come from. Any info would help. Thanks guys

I can't give you any specific recommendations, but since no one else has answered yet, I'll say that many of the small, rural, county-based places are probably really decent places to work (station-based, moderate call volume, decent equipment and protocols), IF you don't mind the ~30k-35k/ year salary that is pretty typical here. I'm sure there area some places that pay better than that, but generally, EMS in the Carolinas pays like crap.

You can probably make more money in the urban areas, but then you are looking at much busier shifts and also a little higher cost of living.

NC & SC definitely offer a good lifestyle and good EMS agencies, but unfortunately the pay is lacking.

I'm a student in Johnston County, I can answer any specific questions about central NC in general, how things work, and agencies in the area. I can tell you the pay isn't the best, but you can certainly live off of it where I am.

MattB1557, I sent you a PM regarding your post.
