I'm currently a college student in NYC, and I'm interested in volunteering as an EMT. I have no problem with the time commitment, it's just the cost of training that is the barrier.

With that said, are there any certification programs available in the city for free, for individuals who want to pursue volunteering? I've tried looking at various hospitals' websites, but so far the search has come up dry.

Thanks for any help.

Great to hear you're wanting to volunteer in your community! I wish you the best of luck, that is how it started out for me...volunteering one night a week, until now that is my career and I love it! I am not sure how things work in NYC, however...I know that in my hometown a department/squad can "sponsor" you and the fee for the class will be waved, you will have to purchase your books...but they can be found online much cheaper than in a college bookstore. Check around with some of the local fire/rescue/ems squads and see if they would be willing to sponsor you to take the EMT class.

Good luck with your endeavors.

You might be able to check out the Central Park Medical Unit.....I don't know if they do training but they might be able to put you to good use lol....

Or they could move to wonderful scenic NC, where classes are free when you are affiliated with a rescue organization.

Some places will have you pay and then reemberse(sp) you after you complete the course.

NYS will pay for your EMT course if you already have 6 months on with a volunteer agency. Most volunteer services in the suburbs will take non-certified volunteers, which will net you some experience and time towards getting the state to pay for the course. There are volunteer agencies out in the outer boroughs, but I'm pretty sure the only one in Manhattan (other than Columbia University EMS) is CPMU. I'm not sure whether or not they take non-certified members, but I've got a friend who volunteers with them who will know. I'll let you know what he says.
