As many of you have seen, here is another update from medic school. I'm sure most of you get tired of reading about this.

I've been struggling throughout the class, but nonetheless I am still in it. I have 4 weeks left and than on to my clinicals. I'm kind of scared for this part, just because I have never had 1 patient contact, so I am a bit skeptical. I'm terrified of my internship, but I guess take one step at a time. It is all a learning process.

I have one question.. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to find a preceptor? I dont know anyone in EMS and I'm the first person in my family to go anywhere near the medical field.

The medic program does not set this up for you?

Ask your classmates. Call local medic employers.

Do you have the option of doing any clinicals in the emergency room before getting on the road?

Finish class *then* clinicals? I've heard about programs that do that, Bet it makes time management a little easier lol.

We have to find time for our clinicals while still making time for class, but as far as where we do them at, it has been prearranged/contracted by the school (Both Hospitals & Amb Services).

Wish I could say that I only have 4 weeks left. Still got 5months myself (and been in full clinicals for a few months)

Hi,

I think all of us were "...kind of scared for this part," :D You are right, take it one step at a time. There were 3 or 4 students in my paramedic program that had not 1 pt contact before starting school, just like you. They did just as well as the rest of us. The big thing to remember is that paramedic clinicals are what YOU make them. Just get out there and get 'er done. Also remember that its not against the rules to still ask questions during clinicals :p

As for finding a preceptor... we did not have a choice. The clinical coordinator looked at our strengths and weaknesses, and then chose the best preceptor for us. If you have to find your own preceptor and you know no one, or nothing about the service there, just ask the clinical coordinator (or any person on the education team)... I am sure they could give you some good recommendations.

Again, Clinicals are what YOU make them...

Take Care,
