What kind of ambulances are yall riding?

Down here 911 services use the Type III box.

There is only one non emergency transport that uses Type II vans, but are slowly switching to Type III and their critical care trucks are Type III.

So what kind of ambulances do you guys have? Which type (Type I, Type II, Type III) Do you like the best, and the worst, and why?

I hate the Type II. They just dont feel practical, and just dont feel EMSy! I would expect one of them to pull up to my house and a soccer mom gets out.

I love Type II because you can walk from the cab to the back if you needed too. You can also talk to the front a lot easier in Type III than Type I.

Primarily my service uses Type II, with a few Type III and Type I thrown in. I personally like my II

I work for two services...one uses mostly the type II's and the other uses mostly the type I's (it does have 1 type III). I prefer driving the type II for better maneuverability (when I worked NYC I especially loved the II's) but obviously they're cramped when it comes to room.

Personally, I could care less what "type" they are as long as they are safe and in good operating condition. I have worked out of suburbans, vans, caddy's, Peterbuilt style, you name it. Most are rough riding, rattle after a few thousand miles, and all have their advantages and disadvantages. As long as they have good lighting, a/c and heat, plenty of room for two medics and one patient (one should not have any more than that in the back of unit) its okay with me.

I have seen so many proud of their "big" units only to see them barely running or "rattling" down the road.

Lately we have more cabinets than material to feel them and we carry more than we should. As well as having critical care transport material (Vents, IV pumps, CPAP vents, etc).

We went to the Type III with the large truck chassis. They stand nearly 13 1/2 feet and run well. I do believe most of the laymen drivers do notice them more as they sit high off the ground in comparison to the other models. We have as well went with the triple color LED light schemes in lieu of rotating beacons or strobes.

1 type I piece of crap Frazer, 1 stretcher converted Land Cruiser, and soon to be 1 converted Excursion......................All serve their function, but I prefer the converted SUV over a Frazer any day of the week (especially over here!)

Here I think it depends on the company. Most or all medics have the box. It seems like Rural/Metro emts get a box and most other places emt's if not all get the van.

At the company I worked for in NYC that's how it was...ALS crews got the box (mostly) and the BLS crews got the van. Where I'm at now, the private service runs mostly vans and the county-run service uses the boxes and keeps the 2 vans as spares.

Around here most of the paid services are Type 2's, and most of the vollies either have Type 3, a few have Type 1s, and some have the medium duty rigs.

Our medic trucks are -B/-P, so we don't need a ton of room, and we do a fair amount of ALS intercepts with the vollie corps.

My avatar is my full time ambulance. It's a Bell 206. Not as strong as I'd like, but functional. My part time ambulances are Type III's. Compared to a 206, anything has tons of room.

As long as it runs, has air, heat, and tunes, a truck is a truck.

Bell's are good choppers though, the flight team here has a 222 as their primary and a 206 as their back up. The 222 is huge (as far as choppers go). But the ground service has 2 type II's (getting rid of one and using the other as the BLS unit) And 10 type III's, latest one being a Ford E-450 chassis... little too big for my taste.
