Also, this. A very salty, incredibly intelligent street medic once told me that it doesn't matter if they're compensating; if they're fighting to compensate and hold that 96, they won't be compensating for long.
Perhaps because increasing PO2 is not a particularly effective way of increasing oxygen carrying capacity? Once you get past 95ish your not going to get a whole lot out of the system.

Agreed, however he is very rarely wrong :p

Can't remember- was this patient a scenario or a real one? I would be interested to know what the followup is.

A different crew ran a call in my area (while I was out for service on the freaking ambulance step) for an unstable Vtach with pulses. Guy was 1 week post CABG and had been feeling poorly all night, mild SOB and some chest pain, bleeding from surgery site. Responding crew threw him on the monitor to see he was having runs of Vtach but nothing sustained, they ended up putting the pads on but hanging Ami...
