Okay, So i've been trying to get my foot in the door into ems somehow. I really want to be an er tech because I love to stay busy and love busy enviroments.

Currently I'm a valet making good money maybe 15hr with tips.

I've just got a call for an ambulance transport company here in Monterey Co.
They seem very interested. Called many times, messages etc.

Should I jump into knowing I might hate it, or wait and see if I can get an ER tech position as I would really like much more?

What kind of shifts do Transport companies work? What is it like? is it mainl 8's, 12s or 24's?

I'm so torn.... Any help, advice, assistance is greatly appreciated!

Some questions to think about.
  1. What do you want to do long term (and not like in the next 6 months, think 2/5/10 years from now, which choice will lead you closer to it) (ER, 911 Service, Fire, Police, Car sales man :P, etc.)
  2. Which pays better and/or can you take a pay cut and still live ok?
  3. How often is it that they've called (are they in bad need because of turnover)
  4. How long have they been in business?

I doubt if they are IFT that they run 24 hr shifts, most likly they are doing 8/10/12 or something like that because they may or may not be getting any real down time. How many IFTs are they running in a day?

I generally want to have a career in the medical field in the future. I would really like to be somewhere in the ER since I think that would be a very good place for me and my energy. I have been looking for and EMS job for the past 8 months and now that this transport position has come up I'm wondering whether I should jump on board or stay where I'm at now (valet) and wait for the right opportunity to arise? What is it like generally working for ambulance companies?

i can tell you that if you wanna work in the ER as an ER tech, hospitals generally do not hire people with out at least 6 months of Experience.

id say go for the EMT position if you want, but before you dive into it research the company, how long they have been around, what their service area is, and how many calls they get a day/week/year. Usually IFT companies are very busy.

id would say go for it, because it will get ur foot in the door for the medical field

If what you really want to be is an ER tech, then that's what you should focus on. On one level, doing transports will expose you to the drudgery of the job squared. But then again, you may learn about the healing power of connection. And you get a pay cut besides!

Ultimately, if you want lessons in patient care, though, you're more likely to get them parking humans than parking cars

i think i'm going to go for it. I'm wiling to take the paycut because I want to get in my foot in the door, and i have been searching for way too long to let this one slide by. I can always transfer when something else becomes avail. anyone know what type of shifts IFT's run? 8s 10s 12s? Anyone suggest keeping both jobs? i'm currently part-time as a Valet

That and its alot easier to transfer EMS jobs once you have the experience
plus if you wanna become a Paramedic in the state of CA you need at least 6 months exp before you can go to medic school

Depending on the company, some run 8's some run 12's some even run 24's, just depending on the company and your schedule really. if they really need people then im sure they will be understanding on schedule restrictions.

if the valet company your working for will be understanding of your new schedule then id say go work two jobs, but itll be hard but its not impossible

Thanks Musicmedic, really appreciate all the input!
