I feel it's important to establish that rapport for the rest of our interaction, without knowing their name right off, it tends to make for awkward conversation when you're 20 minutes in and saying "btw, what is your name?".

I do this all the time. I mean I almost always ask at the start, but sometimes the conversation gets away from you right off the bat for one reason or another. Mostly though, I just forget their name.

My go to move is to have them "spell out their full name for the paperwork". Sixty percent of the time it works every time.
