First post... I'm switching careers to EMS after having a successful IT career. My spouse finished residency in Emergency Medicine a couple of years ago which has allowed me to choose what I would like to do. I wanted to something tangible which brought me to EMS. Recently, I finished EMT class in December, passed NREMT in January, received EMT license and Ambulance license in February. Currently enrolled in A&P and applied for Paramedic School in July.

My question... If you had a choice of working through Paramedic School or not what would you do? After 20 years of not going to school and not having ANY medical knowledge, I am finding school a bit daunting. Not to say that I am not doing well, I received 100% on my EMT final and passed the NREMT with 70 questions on my first go. A lot of my success I owe to my spouse who has been invaluable with ems knowledge. I do not have a problem working BLS after Paramedic school to get more experience or maybe the internships in Paramedic school with garner enough experience. I don't know... Anyway, would appreciate people's thoughts on how best to proceed with working or not working while in school.

I, like many others, had to work full time while going to medic school. The course content isn't particularly challenging, but my class and clinical time averaged 32-40 hours a week for 11 out of the 13 months of my program. It's the hours that get to you.

If your wife makes enough to satisfy your current financial objectives, then don't bother with working, or maybe just do a shift a week if you want.

Some are lucky in that their employers detail them out of OPS to attend medic school FT, paid, on the dept's dime. Don't beat yourself up by working FT while going to school if it's not necessary.

Thank you, I appreciate the links and your opinion.

I read through these links. My questions is more geared to workload though. Based on the workload in Paramedic School, did you find going to school and working to be fine or a hindrance. In other words, if you had a choice, would you work and go to school or just go to school?

I worked part time like one 24 or 12 a week. It helped me put the skills i learned into practice And understand what was going on more in depth with calls

Work or not to work... YOUR WIFES A DR! Let her take care of it, your only going to be in school a year...

Did she work during medical school?

Everyone is different and some can handle work while going to medic school full time and others can not. I worked part time and I would suggest not working more than part time if you have to work at all. In your case, I say do not work at all unless the job facilitates your career and paramedic education I.E. a job as a ER tech in the ED or 911 transport EMT.

But like the poster above said, everyones got there own opinion thats just my 2 cents
