Might as well make my newbie post a big one.
first off i come from a family of firefighters and servicemen
My great-grandfather was in the Navy as a Seabee, and later became a volunteer fireman. My grandfather was an electrician in the airforce and came back to give 20 years to his local fd. My father was a fireman from when he turned 16, volunteered, multiple seasons with cdf...city paid ff...and was forced into retirement as an engineer because of a traumatic fall. Maybe its just a thing in my family for the sons to impress and make their fathers proud. Who knows, my family is just as dysfunctional as any of yours. Anyways the ems side of the job always held my interest more. I just recently earned my EMT-Basic cert and im looking to make a career of it and continue in the legacy, not as a fireman but as an EMT. Im happy with volunteering as an EMT for the rest of my life, and i choose to do so, my goal though is to be an EMT with a 911 ambulance. I know there are ALOT of EMTs fresh out of school fighting for the same position as myself so im here to ask some advice from some of you seasoned emts and medics. How tough was it for you to get to where you are now? Do you credit volunteering with helping you gain experience? There is no time frame for myself, im just looking for some insight into the path you took.
