Interesting that this thread should appear yesterday…
I was reading this thread at 1437 hours PST yesterday when my SAR pager activated. “SAR PAGE FOR QUAD TEAM TO THE _____ _____ RIDGE AREA FOR OVERTURNED QUAD. RIDER TRAPPED. QUAD RIDER CERTIFIED TEAM MEMBERS RESPOND.” Translated that means that some genius was out on his ATV with his friends in the middle of nowhere (literally) and rolled his ATV, which he was now trapped under. Turns out he got separated from his friends before this happened. He was able to get brief cell signals and called his family. We had limited information on his location and unknown injuries.
I immediately took off for the SAR Cache to pick up the ATV’s. We would have liked a helo, but the LE helo wasn’t scheduled to be staffed for another 5 hours. An air ambulance was dispatched to see if they could find him and land. Fire also responded along with an Ambulance. Unfortunately the location of the victim wasn’t certain and the helo spent a lot of time searching before they finally located him. The sound of the helo helped the victims friends find him as well and they removed the ATV. However, the helo was unable to land anywhere in the area, and we were still enroute with an hour ETA. Likewise, Fire was having a hard time because they were trying to make access to a close trailhead on the old jeep trails; 2wd drive engines on jeep trail? No good. Took them an hour to make it 5 miles! When they reached the trailhead four FF’s decided to try to hike it in. By the time they reached the patient we were just 20 minutes out from the trailhead. So we have 2 Chiefs, 2 Engines, 1 Helo, 1 Ambulance, 2 SAR units, 4 Quads, 2 Deputies, and 1 Forest Service LE because this guy was being “crushed” by an ATV… and after all that work he signs AMA and decides to stay there the night and ride out the next day! Put the Fire Guys out of service for the next 2 hours while they hiked out and drove the trails. Put ¼ of the counties deputies out of position. Tied up and Ambulance for 4 hours. And sent us volunteer SAR guys running to a cancelled call that spent 3 hours of our day just to drive and waste gas. And I was the only person on the quad team with EMT, would have been a nice call. Glad he is okay, sad I missed all the “fun”. I’m home now, drinking…
Wonder who he will sue? Probably the cell phone company for not having service in the middle of the wilderness!
