So i just got my EMT-B cert (and my wilderness EMT and im shopping for my intermediate but thats a whole new bag of worms), and im looking for a job in boston. The way it was explained to me all the large emergencies are handled by the FD, so if i could get on a FD in the area, itd be great, but my main focus is emergency medicine. Anyway, im planning on working my way through college and hopefully med school to eventually be an ER doc. I took a year off and did some volunteer work, and now im looking for a company to work with. Could any of you guys offer me some advice for starting and point me towards a couple of companies? im looking at Lyons ambulance service and a couple others right now but i could use some help.

Thanks!

im not from boston so i cant help you except that ive seen threads over the months with people that are in your situation. use the search engine and you can probably find what youre looking for. but getting on FD with only your basic cert is not likely. (not to shatter your hopes)

Last I checked Boston EMS was an third service provider not part of Boston Fire ,though fire does roll on some EMS calls. As for getting started my info is a bit dated but I worked for AMR in the 90's and it wasn't horrible. The money was the going rate for ambulance companies which wasn't great by any means but they had attractive scheduling and were always willing to give out OT. They also had 911 contracts with numerous cities around Boston so you did get emergencies also. The bad part was if you work days or evenings you will be busy, and I'd say I got off on time about 30% of the time, nothing like getting an hour transport dispatched to you 10 minutes before your time to return to the barn.

Incorrect. The primary medical responder for the city of Boston is Boston EMS, which is my ultimate goal. They are a public organization, but they are NOT part of the FD.

Anyways, you might want to look at them.
