Is it possible to take a new class, not a refresher, if you're still Basic certified? I'm certified in NY(it's going to expire in about 4 months) and have zero experience and don't remember much of what was taught and would like to start anew. Do I have to wait until my cert. expires to take a new class?

You can repeat the EMT at anytime and it is often recommended if you have not used any skills or knowledge from your class in a while or did not feel comfortable with your first class. You can also still maintain your current certification if you have the met all the other renewal requirements.

Just to clarify, you would recommended taking the original EMT-B course all over again instead of the refresher? I just want to make sure because I want to make the best out of this "lost" opportunity.

*Some info on what I'm looking at:

1) Original EMT-B course meeting twice a week for 6-7 hours per day for about 3.5 months.

2) The refresher course meets once per week for about 6-7 hours, lasting about 3.5 months as well.

Thanks for your help so far, and any others who chime in...

Ususually, a refresher course is approximately 24 hours - here, it's often done over a three-day weekend (Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday all day). An EMT-Basic course is 120 hours or so.

The refresher touches on every unit of the curriculum, but obviously not in the same depth as the Basic Course. If you feel like you really need it, go ahead and take the course again. You might still want to renew your license, though, rather than go through the whole process of getting recertified after the new course is over.
