Firstly: UK student so please do not get confused if some of the things I say are out of context for US EMS.

So I have 4 months before I start my 3 year degree studying Paramedic Practice. Half of this degree will be out in an ambulance serving people first hand wherever dispatch needs.

So I've wondered to myself, should I spend the summer practicing and studying before I enter my degree so that when I am there, I can get ahead of my studies and be the best student I can for my career serving people... OR spend the summer messing around and enjoying myself.

Personal advise from many current students and paramedics is to just enjoy the summer while it lasts. But I see this as a waste because I should be doing everything reasonable to be the best paramedic I can to provide the best patient outcomes! Of course the cynics will say this attitude will fade with time, but I see it as, why not make the mistakes now rather than in the class room or more importantly out in the field!

So for all the EMTs and Paramedics here, what do you think.

Study for 4 months and get a head start, or party my time away before I'm pushed down in studies and dealing with the public?

+1 to this. Don't forget about being a paramedic completely for 4 months while waking up every morning hugging the toilet. Just do a bit of both.

I'd go for studying, but then again, I was always the academic type.

As others mentioned, you can probably do both to an extent.

What are you going to study if you're not a student yet? Enjoy the time off, stay active, and keep a clear head. Start getting things together and ready a few weeks before you start.

Party and get drunk, practice assessments on those who have partied too hard, while you are drunk.

If you are starting from scratch, I'd get any A&P textbook and study that.

Assuming you learn well just by reading and are already proficient at anatomy and physiology, then get a textbook on EKG's (as this is important and only requires a knowledge base of basic cardiac physiology) or whatever most interests you and start reading that whenever you have some downtime this summer.

Buy your textbooks used and several years old so that you don't have to break the bank on a book that isn't required.

As others have mentioned, you should be able to study and party. Last I checked, that's what most uni students do.

You'll be spending the next 2 years buried in patho books. Not worth it.
