So I am a newer Paramedic and have been in the Fire Service for about 8 years and have been around EMS for about a year and a half. We see lots of patients that are in terrible condition and do not make it through it. Then we see the common every day "I need a ride to the hospital, Taxi" Patients.

I want to talk about the sick patients that are either on their way to seeing the light and the patients that could eventually make it to the same point. Being a newer medic there is a lot I haven't yet seen one of those being a major trauma patient that could die of their injuries.

Well This last Thursday a tragedy struck in my own family out in Colorado. A head on collision to be exact that ultimately killed my Grandma on scene, left my Mom with a traumatic brain injury and multiple fractures which pretty much included every bone from her waist down minus her right femur, and my grandpa with multiple fractures as well as cardiac arrest that happened after getting to the trauma center due to all of his fluids he lost due to his fractures, my step dad with a couple of fractures but mostly ok.

I so far have been able to give the best care to my patients at least to my abilities. The ones that I can't do a lot for I still strive to make the ride to the hospital as easy and as comfortable as possible. So far I have been able to brush everything off and not let much bother me after the calls.

After this accident involving family members happened, it opened my eyes to really trying to do the best for every patient I have in the back of my ambulance regardless of what their problem might be because it's someone's loved ones and family members.

Has anyone ever ran into a tragedy that involved your family even if you were not part of the call that opened your eyes to the level of care you might give a patient from that point on?

Not like yours, but my daughter has been living with an illness over the last several months. She went into shock in March and was taken by ambulance to another hospital for more skilled care. I think I identify with parents more, and she with patients. She is also on our squad as a student and at times a patient will ask if we have ever been a pt in an ambulance. She has said yes, recently and it seems to open the pt up to her.
