We were mutal aid on this. It taxed the resources of 2 counties, and my nerves. Both of my kids were on busses when the call was dispatched. All we got was "Mutal aid for a MVA w/ rollover involving a school bus. They have activated their MCI protocol."

I couldn't get the dang Next-Hell in our truck to work fast enough to reach our dispatch to get the bus number involved. Not my kids, thank god...but the injured go to school with my daughter.

But school busses do not need seatbelts? I have never understood that logic.

the logic is if we lose some kids, the parents have to try again. school bus accidents a children's natural predators  they should have seatbelts

This bus did have seatbelts. The kids do not wear them, and the bus drivers are not allowed to force them to.

The logic is based on the design of large school buses and a concept known as "compartmentalization". The design of the bus seats, tall back seats spaced close together, provide crash protection to occupants.

Of course there are buses for special needs children that require seat belts and harnesses.

Here's additional info from the Nationa Highway Safety Adnministration's web site: Link

I'm glad to hear everyone is okay. I can imagine those few moments were tough for you.

A year ago one of my service's ambulances t-boned a school bus (from the district I was teaching in) while possibly going significantly over the speed limit. It sent the bus into a wooded area, but everyone was okay. It turned out to be the bus driver's fault, but it these situations fault really doesn't matter... it's really all about the kids.

Thankfully everyone was okay.

If their was a fire they would have to unbuckle all the kids (thats what my old bus driver said) Also the bus is very big, and kids are not, soo if they are waring a lap belt and the big bus stops in .004 sec and the kids are still moving forward at 45MPH that would be a nasty combo.

The People's Republic of New Jersey requires that all School Busses have seatbelts, and I'm under the impression that at the least, all kids are required to wear them. Every bus I've seen has a seat belt cutter velcro'd to the front bulkhead above the driver... so that belts can be easily removed.

One of the many reasons why bus co's and school districts aren't big supporters of seatbelts is that you LOSE space on a bus if you mandate seatbelts. Instead of having a bus that sits 72 passengers, 3 to a seat, you have a bus that sits 48 passengers, 2 to a seat.

Given that the busses may well have 70 kids on thier routes, they are never filled to capacity.

The bus driver said he was running late, and (began) taking sharp turns, she said outside the hospital today. We were having fun. It was kind of like a roller coaster.

methinks grampy lead foot here might need some driving lessons....
